Ep. 12 – De Pobreza a Riqueza: How We’re Breaking Generational Cycles as a Family (Season Finale Part 2)

In part 2 of our season finale of TechQuiero Más, we continue one of the most personal conversations we’ve had on this podcast — this time with Viv’s parents. This episode is about family, sacrifice, survival, and what it really means to break cycles together. From starting over in the U.S. with limited resources to building stability for the next generation, we talk about the realities behind going from survival mode to creating wealth as a family. Because generational wealth doesn’t start with millions — it starts with decisions, discipline, and the courage to want more. Before we get into it, we start with our question of the day: If you won the lottery today, what’s the first thing you would do with the money? Then we dive into: 🏠 Starting a Family in the U.S. • What was the hardest part of building a family here from scratch • The emotional and financial pressure of starting over in a new country • What survival mode looked like behind the scenes 💰 Learning Financial Stability • How they learned to manage money better over time • The mistakes, lessons, and mindset shifts that changed everything • What “de pobreza a riqueza” really means in real life ✨ Advice for the Next Generation • What they would tell a young immigrant coming to this country today • How to stay hopeful when life feels uncertain • Why breaking cycles starts long before money shows up This episode is a reminder that wealth is bigger than money — it’s peace, options, stability, and the ability to give your family a different future. If you’re first-gen, the child of immigrants, or trying to become the turning point in your family’s story — this episode is for you. Then we answer three questions from our community: 💰 Money: What was the very first thing you did to start overcoming poverty and begin building financial stability? 💼 Career: I’m a teacher looking for a career change, but imposter syndrome is making me feel stuck — where do I even start? 💗 Relationships: We’re almost debt-free, expecting our first baby, and trying to balance emergency savings, investing, and retirement — what should we prioritize first? — To shop Viv’s debt tracker, budget tracker, and access free financial tools: https://stan.store/overgenpoverty (https://stan.store/overgenpoverty) To submit an anonymous question and be featured in a future episode: https://forms.gle/SoS6NHpsPfMm3KSx7 (https://forms.gle/SoS6NHpsPfMm3KSx7) If you enjoyed this episode, don’t forget to COMMENT, FOLLOW, and SUBSCRIBE 🎧 And if you feel compelled to RATE our podcast, we’d truly appreciate your feedback! Ep. 11 - How to Build a Career in Corporate America as an Immigrant (Season Finale Part 1)

In part 1 of our season finale of TechQuiero Más, this episode gets personal. For the first time, Xavi’s parents join us on the podcast to share their story — from immigrating from Ecuador to building careers, stability, and opportunities for the next generation. This conversation is bigger than career advice. It’s about sacrifice, resilience, survival, and what it really takes to build a life from scratch in a new country. They came to the U.S. with uncertainty, and the pressure to make it work — not just for themselves, but for their family. Today, we’re talking about the journey behind that. Before we get into it, we start with a question you can reflect on: What was your first job in the U.S.? Then we dive into: 🇪🇨 Part 1: The Beginning • Their first jobs after arriving in the U.S. • The biggest struggles early on — language barriers, money, identity, and starting over • What immigrant survival mode really looks like behind the scenes 📈 Part 2: Career Progression • How their careers evolved over time • Whether they had a clear plan — or were figuring it out as they went • The biggest lessons they learned about work and opportunity in America • The moments they wanted to give up — but didn’t ✨ Part 3: The Full Circle Moment • What “querer más” means to them now • How they think about success after everything they’ve built • Advice for immigrants trying to break into corporate America and create a better future for their families If you’re first-gen, the child of immigrants, or trying to create opportunities your family never had — this episode is for you. Then we answer three questions from our community: 💰 Money: As a beginner, what stocks or funds should I be investing in first? 💼 Career: I’m 18, feel lost, and have no idea what to do with my future. How do I build stability when I feel like I’m starting from survival mode? 💗 Relationships / Life: How do you balance helping your family business while still protecting your own long-term career growth and financial future? Ep. 10 - How to Have the Money Talk With Your Family (Without It Getting Weird)?

In this episode of TechQuiero Más, Viv and Xavi tackle something that almost every first-gen struggles with…how to talk about money with your family. Because let’s be real — for a lot of Latino and immigrant households, money is either stressful, avoided, or only talked about when something’s wrong. So how do you bring it up… without it getting uncomfortable, emotional, or straight up awkward? We talk about: • Why many first-gen and Latino families avoid money conversations • How scarcity, survival mode, and cultural norms play a role • Why first-gens often feel pressure to financially support their families Before we get into it, we start with a question you can reflect on (or laugh about): What’s the craziest financial ask you’ve ever gotten from family? Then we get personal — sharing real stories of money conversations we’ve had (and avoided) with our own families. And most importantly, we walk you through how to actually have the conversation: • How to bring up money without making it awkward • What to say (and what NOT to say) • Why setting boundaries early is key • When and how to share your real numbers • How to show your family what’s possible — without creating pressure We also talk about the mistakes to avoid, and how to approach these conversations with empathy while still protecting your own financial future. If you’ve ever felt stuck between wanting to help your family and trying to build your own life — this episode is for you. Then we answer three questions from our community: 💰 Money: When investing in a Roth IRA, is it better to focus on one ETF (like the S&P 500) or diversify across multiple funds? 💼 Career: As a recent computer science grad struggling to land a software engineering role, how do you connect with startups directly? 💗 Relationships: How do you deal with limiting beliefs and self-doubt as a first-gen? Ep. 8 - How We're Becoming First-Gen Millionaires

In this episode of TechQuiero Más, Viv and Xavi dive into what it really takes to become the first millionaire in your family — and why it’s less about luck and more about consistency. We’re talking all things investing, building generational wealth, and protecting everything you’re working so hard to build — even if you’re just getting started. We also share a personal story we’ve never talked about on the podcast before…we signed a prenup. And no — it doesn’t mean we’re planning for divorce. Before we get into it, we start with a question you can think through at home: If you had no debt, some savings, but nothing invested — would you prioritize investing or helping your parents financially? Then we dive into: • The two paths to investing: “set it and forget it” vs. self-managing your portfolio • Beginner-friendly options like target date funds • How to start investing in index funds (S&P 500, total market) • Why we chose to manage our own portfolio — and how we approach it • The truth about building wealth as a first-gen: consistency over perfection • Why prenups aren’t just for the wealthy • What a prenup can actually include (assets, debt, businesses) • How to think about protection — for yourself, your partner, and your future family • How to approach the conversation (especially if it feels uncomfortable or unfamiliar) Then we answer three questions from our community: 💰 Money: I wiped out my savings and Roth IRA, have debt, and inconsistent income — what should be my top priority to get back on track? 💼 Career: What path did you take to break into tech, and was it worth changing careers as a first-gen? 💗 Relationships: How do I start a conversation with my fiancé about a prenup when we’ve never been exposed to this before? If you’re trying to build wealth, protect your future, and become the first in your family to do it — this episode is for you. Ep. 5 - Are you and your partner financially compatible?

In this episode of TechQuiero Más, Viv and Xavi talk about something that impacts almost every relationship — money. Are you financially compatible with your partner? Whether you’re married, dating, or currently single, learning how to have open and honest conversations about finances can make a huge difference in your relationship and your long-term financial future. We start the episode with a quick game you can try with your partner at home — questions designed to reveal how each of you thinks about money, fear, and long-term goals. Then we dive into: • Why couples should start talking about money earlier than most people think • The impact your childhood and “money story” can have on your financial habits • How to decide whether to build wealth separately, together, or through a hybrid approach • Why knowing your numbers (salary, net worth, retirement goals, emergency funds) matters for both partners • The 4% rule and how to estimate your retirement number using the FIRE framework Research shows that many couples avoid these conversations — even in long-term relationships — which can lead to misunderstandings and financial stress later on. In this episode, we also share personal stories about how we grew up thinking about money and how those experiences shaped our financial conversations as a couple. Then we answer three questions from our community: 💰 Money: Do you need thousands of dollars to open a High Yield Savings Account? What should beginners know before opening one? 💼 Career: What advice would we give to a first-generation college student who is about to graduate and start their career? 💗 Relationships: When should couples disclose their salaries?
