Nick explains why fiber has become the dominant medium within modern data centers, where large numbers of connections must be installed within limited rack and floor space.</p><p><br></p><p>The discussion begins with the connectors commonly used in these environments. The duplex LC connector remains a standard option, using one fiber to transmit data and another to receive it. For higher-density installations, MPO and MTP connectors can carry 12, 24, 48, or more fibers within a single compact connection.</p><p><br></p><p>The episode also looks at emerging very-small-form-factor connectors such as the MMC. These newer designs aim to increase density even further, with multiple MMC connectors fitting within approximately the same space as one conventional MPO or MTP connector. One of the main challenges highlighted is fiber cleanliness. Once cleaned, the cassette passed testing, demonstrating how a basic inspection and cleaning process could have prevented wasted labor, shipping costs, and downtime.</p><p><br></p><p>Gordon and Nick explain why technicians should inspect, clean, and inspect again before making a connection. Fiber inspection probes allow installers to examine connector end faces, while IEC 61300-3-35 provides recognized pass-or-fail criteria for identifying contamination and defects.</p><p><br></p><p>The conversation then turns to pre-terminated cabling. Factory-terminated solutions reduce the need for on-site splicing, limit dust and debris, and allow installations to be completed more quickly.
