[…] It all starts with the big storm clouds. These clouds, known as cumulonimbus, are very high and filled with drops of water and chunks of ice that move in all directions. Because of the very rapid movements inside the cloud, friction occurs between the water drops and the ice particles. This friction creates electricity, a bit like when you rub a balloon against your hair and it sticks up in the air. This electricity is divided into two charges, positive and negative. In general, the positive charges gather at the top of the cloud and the negative charges at the bottom. But the ground also has positive charges and when the difference between the negative charges in the cloud and the positive charges on the ground becomes very large, lightning strikes. […]
