Textbook Sleep #45: Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. on Contract Law

Welcome to Textbook Sleep, the Maximum-Strength Sleep Aid, where we read aloud boring public-domain textbooks to help you fall asleep.

I’m sorry to say that we’re once again featuring The Common Law by Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., this time on the scintillating subject of contract law.

Well, I suppose it is interesting, even exciting, to those who understand its every nuance and thus make the big elephant bucks, writing contracts.

And without law, things fall apart, it’s scientific.

So I do not mean to denigrate contract law, I just suspect that, for most of us, it is not a subject to compete with whatever the YouTube algorithm is feeding us at the moment. No, it’s a subject to gently fall asleep to. A legal lullaby.

In the 19th century, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. was read to insomniacs, and the treatment had a cure rate of 100% among the non-attorney population. He was also known for putting entire juries to sleep after only a few minutes, and not a few judges, either. He won a lot of cases that way.

I made all that up.

But imagine the progress we as a civilization have made, that now, in August 2026, anyone can listen to the writing of this august jurist from an electronic device, simulating the soporific effect he has had on students of law for over a hundred years.

We have repurposed Oliver Wendell Holmes from a towering genius of American jurisprudence, to a modern-day equivalent of a warm glass of milk.

The tintinnabulation of the bells, and then we begin.

Thank you, Project Gutenberg, for the text.

This recording will end quietly.

Get full access to Pieces of Jim at jimnolan1.substack.com/subscribe

Textbook Sleep #44: Trouble in 12th-Century Rome

Welcome to Textbook Sleep, the Maximum-Strength Sleep Aid. To help you sleep, we read aloud the boring texts that once put you to sleep in school.

Edward Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is again our choice.

In Volume 6, the decline is fully underway. One poignant example—there is nowhere to get a decent espresso, at any price, because espresso won’t be invented until 1884 in Turin by Angelo Moriondo.

Without espresso, without gelato—not invented until the 16th century—the collapse of Rome was inevitable.

Thank you, Project Gutenberg, for providing the free text.

This recording will end quietly.

Get full access to Pieces of Jim at jimnolan1.substack.com/subscribe

Textbook Sleep #43: The Decline and Fall Asleep of the Roman Empire

Welcome to Textbook Sleep, the Maximum-Strength Sleep Aid. To help you sleep, we read aloud the boring texts that once put you to sleep in school.

Like Edward Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

A.K.A. the decline and fall of your insomnia.

This is my second reading from it. The entire History is approximately 1.5 million words long and would take me some 200 hours to read it all aloud.

So, 199 hours to go.

Thank you, Project Gutenberg, for providing the free text.

This recording will end quietly.

Get full access to Pieces of Jim at jimnolan1.substack.com/subscribe
