S2E1- What Happens When We Pray?
What actually happens when we pray? In the first episode of Season 2 of That Verse Isn’t About Your Breakup, Becky!, we’re opening our Bibles and studying what Scripture actually teaches about prayer. We’ll look at Jesus’ prayer life, John 17, what it means to “pray continually,” prayer in anxiety and suffering, what happens when we don’t know what to pray, and why unanswered prayer doesn’t mean prayer has failed. We’ll also explore the incredible Moravian prayer movement at Herrnhut and take a look at what scientific research can- and cannot- tell us about prayer. Science can study the person who prays. Scripture tells us about the God they’re praying to. Grab your Bible, your pens, and your highlighters, and study along with me! Season 1 was about learning the tools. Season 2 is about using them. So grab your Bible and pull up a chair in my Bible Study Corner.

S1E14- Faith Isn't What We Think It Is (Hebrews 11)
What if faith isn't pretending everything is okay? In this episode, we take a deep look at Hebrews 11 and discover that biblical faith is not positive thinking, emotional certainty, or pretending life isn't hard. Through the lives of Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, and others, we'll see that faith is trusting God's character even when we don't fully understand His plans. Together, we'll learn that faithfulness isn't measured by outcomes- but by continued trust in a faithful God. Key Verses -Hebrews 11:1-40 Cross References -Hebrews 10:35-39 -Hebrews 12:1-3 How to Study This Passage As you read Hebrews 11, ask: -Who is the author writing to? -What is happening in Hebrews 10 before chapter 11 begins? -How is faith defined in verse 1? -What actions are connected to faith throughout the chapter? -What repeated phrases do you notice? -How do the examples of faith differ from one another? -Why does the chapter shift from victory to suffering? -What does this reveal about God's character? -How does Hebrews 12 build on Hebrews 11? Reflection -What circumstances am I struggling to trust God with? -Do I define faith by outcomes or by trust? -Where am I waiting on God right now? -What would it look like to trust God's character even when I don't understand His plan? -Am I looking for certainty- or learning to walk by faith? S1E13- The Potter’s Field (The Potter, The Temple, and The Place Purchased for Strangers)
What if the most overlooked details in the story of Judas are actually the most important? In this episode, we continue tracing the story of the thirty pieces of silver by exploring the potter, the temple, and the field purchased for strangers. Together, we'll discover why these details were included in Scripture, how they connect to Old Testament prophecy, and what they reveal about God's plan of redemption for outsiders. Key Verses -Matthew 27:3–10 -Zechariah 11:12–13 -Jeremiah 18:1–6 -Jeremiah 19:1–13 -Ephesians 2:11–13 -John 10 Cross References -Jeremiah 18:1–6 -Jeremiah 19:1–13 -Isaiah 64:8 -Romans 9:20–24 -Ephesians 2:11–19 -1 Peter 2:9–10 How to Study This Passage As you read Matthew 27 and the related passages, ask: -Why does Matthew include the detail about the potter? -Why is the temple specifically mentioned? -What role does a potter play throughout Scripture? -What did Jeremiah learn at the potter's house? -Why was the field purchased with blood money? -Why was the field designated for strangers? -What repeated themes do you see throughout these passages? -What do these details reveal about God's character? -How does this story point to Christ and the Gospel? Reflection Where have I felt like an outsider? Do I believe God's redemption extends even to people like me? What broken places in my life need to be placed in the Potter's hands? How does this story change the way I view God's ability to redeem painful circumstances? What does the potter's field teach me about God's heart for the overlooked and forgotten? Final Reminder Judas saw a field. The religious leaders saw a place to bury strangers. But God saw something bigger. A field purchased with the price of the rejected Shepherd. A place for outsiders. A reminder that redemption was never meant for a select few. Because the Gospel is the story of God bringing near those who were once far away. S1E8- Who Told You Who You Are? (Daniel)
What if the identity you’ve been living from… isn’t the one God gave you? Key Verses -Daniel 1:8 -Daniel 3:17-18 -Daniel 2:34-35 -Genesis 1:27 Key Focus Identity under pressure How environments, labels, and culture try to redefine who we are Recognizing the difference between what we’ve been told and what God has spoken What This Episode Covers -The historical setting of the Babylonian exile and why it matters -How changing names in Daniel 1 was an intentional attempt to reshape identity -The subtle ways identity is still challenged today through labels and internal beliefs -What it means that Daniel “purposed in his heart” before the pressure came -How identity shows up under pressure in the fire (Daniel 3) -The significance of the fourth man in the fire and God’s presence in suffering -The prophetic vision in Daniel 2 and what it reveals about God’s authority over every kingdom -The pattern of God stepping into what looks finished- and rewriting the outcome (Daniel 6) Write This Down -“My identity is not defined by my environment.” -“Labels are loud- but they are not always true.” -“I can decide who I am before the pressure comes.” -“God meets me in the fire, not just outside of it.” -“What feels final is not always finished with God.” Cross References -Genesis 1:27 -Romans 12:2 -2 Corinthians 5:17 -Isaiah 43:1 Big Takeaways -Identity is often challenged in seasons of pressure and change -The enemy doesn’t always attack directly- sometimes he redefines -What you believe about yourself shapes how you live -God is present in the pressure- not absent from it -Earthly power is temporary- God’s authority is eternal -Your identity is rooted in what God has spoken, not what you’ve experienced Reflection What labels have you accepted as truth that God never spoke? Where has your environment tried to redefine who you are? What would change if you started living from what God says- instead of what you’ve been told? Final Reminder You may have been shaped by your environment… but you were never defined by it. You may have been labeled… but that doesn’t make it truth. Because the enemy may try to rename you… …but he cannot rewrite what God has already spoken. Key Verse Genesis 16:7–13 Key Focus Understanding what a Christophany is Seeing how Jesus appears in the Old Testament Connecting the Old Testament directly to Christ What This Episode Covers The difference between Theophanies and Christophanies How to recognize when an appearance may be Christ Why some “appearances of God” seem personal, physical, and relational Key examples of possible Christophanies in Scripture How this changes the way we read the entire Bible Write This Down “Jesus did not begin in the New Testament.” “Christ has always been present in God’s plan.” “The Old Testament doesn’t just point to Jesus—it sometimes reveals Him.”“I don’t want to miss where Jesus is already present in Scripture.” “The Bible is one unified story centered on Christ.” Cross References Genesis 1:26 Genesis 18:1–2 Joshua 5:13–15 Daniel 3:24–25 John 1:1 How to Study This Topic As you read these passages, ask: Who is this figure, and how are they described? Are they speaking with authority that belongs to God? Are they being treated as God—or as a messenger? What makes this moment different from a typical angelic appearance? Does this connect to what we know about Jesus in the New Testament? What clues in the text suggest this is more than symbolic? Big Takeaways Jesus did not begin at His birth—He has always existed Some Old Testament appearances may be pre-incarnate Christ The Bible is deeply connected from beginning to end God reveals Himself progressively throughout Scripture Recognizing Christ in the Old Testament transforms how we read it Reflection How would it change the way you read the Bible… if you expected to see Jesus on every page? Key Verse Exodus 3:2–6 Key Focus Understanding what a Theophany is Recognizing when God visibly reveals Himself in Scripture Shifting from seeing God as distant → to seeing Him as present What This Episode Covers What a Theophany is (in simple, practical terms) Why moments like the burning bush, pillar of fire, and Mount Sinai matter How often we read past moments where God is clearly revealing Himself The difference between knowing about God vs. recognizing His presence Why understanding this changes how you read the entire Bible Write This Down “God doesn’t just speak—He reveals Himself.” “Theophanies are moments of presence, not just power.” “God is not distant—He makes Himself known.” “Just because something is familiar doesn’t mean it’s ordinary.” “I don’t want to read past where God is showing up.” Cross References Exodus 13:21 Exodus 19:16–20 Psalm 77:13–14 How to Study This Passage As you read Exodus 3 and other passages like it, ask: What is actually happening here? How is God revealing Himself in this moment? Is this symbolic—or is this a real encounter? What does this show me about how God interacts with His people? What details would I normally overlook if I rushed through this? What does this reveal about God’s character? Am I slowing down enough to recognize what I’m reading? Big Takeaways God is not distant—He actively reveals Himself Theophanies are not random—they are intentional moments of God’s presence Scripture is full of encounters, not just information Familiar passages can still hold overlooked depth Recognizing how God shows up changes how we read everything Reflection Where in your life have you assumed God is distant or silent? Big Takeaways -David is not primarily an example of what we should become- he is a picture of Christ -Israel represents our inability to save ourselves -The victory in this story belongs to the one who steps in- not the ones who stand back -The Bible consistently points to Jesus as the true Deliverer -The Gospel is not “try harder”- it’s “it is finished” Reflection Where in your life are you trying to be the one who fixes it, fights it, or overcomes it on your own? What would it look like to trust that Jesus has already stepped in on your behalf? Final Reminder You’re not David. The victory was never yours to earn- It was His to win. S1E2- More Than You Can Handle
Have you ever heard the phrase, “God won’t give you more than you can handle”? Yeah… me too. But what if that’s not actually what the Bible says? In this episode, we’re slowing down and taking a closer look at 1 Corinthians 10:13—not just reading it but studying it in context the way it was meant to be understood. We’ll walk through this verse step by step using a simple, repeatable method that will help you stop guessing what Scripture means and start seeing it clearly for yourself. You’ll learn: -Why so many Bible verses get taken out of context -What 1 Corinthians 10:13 actually means -The difference between temptation and trials -How to use Scripture to interpret Scripture -And why God sometimes allows seasons that feel like more than you can handle This episode is both a teaching and a training so- grab your Bible, a pen, and your favorite notebook and get ready to study. Because when you understand what God actually said… everything changes. Key Verse -1 Corinthians 10:13 (Where the misinterpretation comes from) Key Focus -Understanding Scripture in context -Temptation vs. trials -Learning how to study the Bible using the 10-question method Write This Down “Context determines meaning” “This passage is about temptation—not trials” “Temptation comes from my own desires—not from God” “God provides a way out of temptation, but walks us through trials” Cross References -James 1:13–14 -2 Corinthians 1:8–9 -John 16:33 -Psalm 34:19 How to Study This Passage Use these steps: -Identify the key word (temptation) -Look for repeated words -Read the surrounding verses -Ask who it was written to and why -Find where else Scripture talks about the same topic -Compare meanings -Define what it meant THEN -Define what it means NOW -Apply it to your life LAST Big Takeaways -Not every commonly quoted phrase is actually what Scripture teaches -1 Corinthians 10:13 is about resisting sin- not surviving hardship -The Bible shows that believers do experience overwhelming trials -God allows pressure to shift our dependence from ourselves to Him Final Reminder It may be more than you can handle… but it has never been more than God can handle.
