Is eTIMS really about bringing informal businesses into the tax bracket, OR forcing compliant businesses to pay more taxes?
KRA recently announced that expense claims made by businesses must be accompanied by eTIMS invoices, otherwise they won't be tax deductible. The government has sold this as a move to force taxpayers to be tax compliant, and to bring informal businesses into the tax bracket. Is this true though? Will it bring more businesses into compliance, or is it making it so hard for compliant businesses to claim expenses, forcing them to pay more taxes? Is it true that only taxpayers who make returns pay taxes? Is it true that Kenya's informal sector doesn't pay taxes? Is it true that salaried folk make better voting choices because they feel "more pain" from bad governance? In this brief episode, Kellie weighs in on the eTIMS issue, and the over-taxed citizen's responsibility insofar as tax and governance are concerned. Part 1: How the African got miseducated.
Note: This episode was recorded towards the end of 2024. References to "next year" mean THIS year! Thanks for listening. This year, the first batch of CBC students will be completing their junior secondary school. As it stands, no one is clear about how they will transition to senior secondary and into tertiary education. How did we make such a huge mess of our kids' education? Professor Wandia Njoya (https://x.com/wmnjoya) joins us in studio to talk about Kenya, and really the continent's education system. Where did the system we have today originate from, and what purpose does it serve? This is part of a 2-episode series. Legalizing and commercializing marijuana and (over) regulation of agriculture and their harms
Kenya is currently the Africa guinea pig for over-regulation of agriculture with a goal of commercialising the sector. This episode looks at legalization (and commercialization) of marijuana in the US as a base to see how capitalism ruins things. Legalizing drugs is good for consumers. However, commercializing drugs is not good for consumers. On the same breath, developing agriculture is good for farmers and consumers. Over-regulating agriculture is not good for either! This solo episode is a stream of consciousness of these two things that are related in a way...Listen to the episode of The Daily that is mentioned on this episode here. We are heavily in debt, now what?
Many African countries, Kenya included are heavily indebted at the moment. Kenya owes about 14 trillion shillings, which is about 72% of our GDP. Half of this tax is domestic debt (denominated in Kenya Shillings), and the other half is foreign currency denominated (USD). What are our options, seeing as it seems we have hit the ceiling insofar as how much we can raise from taxes. Kwame talks to us about the nature of our debt currently, and our options (if any) moving forward. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Email is on thefourfourteenpod@gmail.com (mailto:thefourfourteenpod@gmail.com) if you have any questions, or if you want to support us.
