Why Your AI Project Is Stalling

The most important lesson I've learned in 20+ years working with AI and food: If you want your AI initiatives to succeed, don’t start with the AI. Start with your humans. It sounds counterintuitive in an age of prompt engineering, model selection, and LangChain workflows. But the truth is: Without strong human capabilities, even the smartest AI is just running in circles—fast. Here’s what I mean. The Data That Stopped Me When we look at AI implementations that fail, it's rarely because the model wasn't powerful enough or the prompts not working. It's because the humans using it weren’t ready to guide it. The core capabilities we see missing most often: Strategic Thinking * What actually matters? * What’s the real context? * What are we trying to achieve? Value Judgment * What’s worth pursuing? * What trade-offs are acceptable? * What standards matter? Without this foundation, AI becomes a highly capable intern with no direction—fast, cheap, but fundamentally misaligned. What we’re witnessing is a shift from tool thinking to team thinking. The AI doesn’t replace your team—it extends it. But only if the team is ready. Why This Matters Now This looks like more than just a tech adoption curve. It’s a leadership challenge. In our work across food and agriculture, we’ve seen two very different trajectories: * Some teams leapfrog the competition by using AI as a strategic partner. * Others burn time and budget producing faster mediocrity. The difference? Not the model. Not the data. The people. Teams that know how to frame a problem, assess competing priorities, and apply judgment are getting extraordinary results with the same tech others fumble with. What This Means for You The implications for our industry are significant. You don’t need more tools. You need more alignment. Because when your team knows how to ask better questions, AI gives you better answers. This isn't about being a prompt ninja. It's about becoming a meaningmaker—someone who can create context and purpose from raw data. The brands that will thrive are the ones who understand that AI isn’t replacing strategy. It’s sharpening it. How to Build These Muscles If you’re not getting what you hoped from AI yet, try this reset: * Run an internal audit: Can your team clearly define success for each initiative? If not, fix that first. * Introduce “Strategic Framing” prompts before you even open ChatGPT. Example: “What tension are we trying to resolve?” * Treat AI as a sparring partner—ask it to argue both sides of a tough trade-off, not just summarize content. * Slow down to go faster: A 10-minute team huddle to agree on context saves hours of back-and-forth prompt iteration. This is the kind of work we do with clients every day—embedding AI into their culture, not just their stack. Where 6 Seeds Comes In We’re not an AI consultancy. We’re a clarity consultancy. At 6 Seeds, we help food and ag companies reveal the real problem, reimagine the direction, and realize smarter outcomes—with AI as an embedded partner throughout. * We start with behavioral insight and data * We reframe using strategic storytelling * We build systems that actually get used Want to run a "Human Readiness for AI" session with your team? We're happy to facilitate. Let’s Talk What’s the biggest friction you’ve encountered when trying to bring AI into your work? Where has it surprised you? And what would help your team become better meaningmakers in this new landscape? Reply and let me know. I’d love to hear what’s working—and what’s still unclear. Free Ozempic for job seekers in the UK

If you’re reading this newsletter regularly, you know how much we’re going on about the changes Ozempic will bring to the world of food and drink - and society in general. But even we didn’t see this one coming: Britain has apparently found a solution to the global unemployment crisis: Weight loss shots. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Health Secretary Wes Streeting have sparked debate with their recent comments on the potential economic impact of drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. The Weighty Issue at Hand The Government's Stance: * PM Starmer suggests weight loss drugs "could be very important" for the economy * Health Secretary Streeting argues that "widening waistbands" are "holding back our economy" The Numbers: * Nearly 1.4 million Brits of working age are currently unemployed * Obesity-related illness causes an average of four extra sick days per year, according to government claims The Proposed Solution: Weight Loss Injections The UK government is placing a significant bet on weight loss drugs as a potential economic catalyst. Here's what's happening: * A five-year trial of Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is set to begin * 3,000 participants will be involved in the study * Health Innovation Manchester and Lilly (the drug's manufacturer) will lead the research Key Objectives of the Trial: * Examine if the drug reduces unemployment * Assess impact on public health service usage * Evaluate reduction in obesity-related complications The Big Questions While the government's approach is bold, it raises several critical questions: * What percentage of unemployed individuals are out of work due to obesity-related illnesses? * How will weight loss shots help overweight (but not unwell) job seekers secure employment? * Could reduced weight bias in hiring play a role in potential economic benefits? * Is this approach addressing the root causes of unemployment and obesity? * Will “fat-shaming” become socially accepted? Industry Implications For those in the food and beverage sector, this development signals potential shifts: * Increased focus on healthier product offerings may become crucial * Opportunities for partnerships with health and wellness initiatives could arise * Consumer demand for lower-calorie alternatives may grow Looking Ahead As we monitor this very new, and frankly controversial, approach to economic stimulation, several factors will be key to watch: * Results of the Mounjaro trial and its impact on employment figures * Public reception and uptake of weight loss injections * Potential policy changes related to obesity and employment While the effectiveness of this strategy remains to be seen, it's clear that the intersection of health and economics is becoming increasingly complex. As industry leaders, staying informed and adaptable is crucial. What's your take on this bold new approach? We'd love to hear your thoughts on how this could impact your business and the broader industry landscape. Will "Unshrinkflation" Revive Snack Sales?

Note: the audio version of this article is created by Google’s NotebookLM. In a surprising twist, PepsiCo is reversing course on the industry-wide trend of shrinkflation. But will this strategy be enough to reignite consumer appetite for its snack brands? The Crunch on Chip Bags As we've watched our favorite snacks seemingly shrink before our eyes, PepsiCo is taking a bold step to fatten up our chip bags once again. Here's what's on the table: * 20% more chips in select Tostitos and Ruffles bags at no extra cost * Two additional small bags in 18-count variety packs This move comes as a response to a perfect storm of market pressures: * Snack sales declined 0.5% in Q3 2024 * Retail snack volumes dropped 1.1% year-over-year * Salty snack prices have surged 36% since 2020, outpacing overall grocery inflation of 21% The Bigger Picture: Why Now? PepsiCo's decision isn't just about being generous. It's a strategic play in a changing snack landscape: * Consumer Backlash: Shoppers have grown weary of shrinkflation, with 68% switching brands when they notice reduced sizes. * Private Label Pressure: Budget-conscious consumers are increasingly opting for less expensive store brands from retailers like Walmart and Costco. * Regulatory Scrutiny: Democratic lawmakers have accused major brands of price gouging, linking shrinkflation to broader inflationary pressures. * Market Leadership: As the leading U.S. salty snack producer, PepsiCo's move may force competitors to follow suit, reshaping industry dynamics. The Ozempic Factor An unexpected player in this saga is Ozempic, the diabetes drug that's become a popular weight loss aid. Its appetite-suppressing effects are contributing to reduced snack sales across the board. The question remains: will bigger bags tempt consumers who've moved on from frequent snacking? What's the Outlook? We're giving the probability that "unshrinkflation" will significantly boost snack sales a cautious 65%. This forecast reflects several factors: * The strategy directly addresses consumer frustrations with shrinkflation * Increased value may attract price-sensitive shoppers * The move could rebuild brand loyalty and trust However, challenges remain: * The impact of weight loss drugs on snacking habits is a wild card * Overall inflationary pressures continue to affect consumer spending * Healthier eating trends may limit the appeal of traditional salty snacks So What? Navigating the Snack Aisle Shift * Value Proposition: Emphasize quantity and quality to justify premium pricing. * Portion Control: Consider offering a range of sizes to cater to various consumer needs. * Health-Conscious Options: Develop and promote healthier snack alternatives to capture the wellness-focused market. * Transparency: Be upfront about product changes to build consumer trust. * Innovation: Explore new flavors or formats to reignite interest in the category. As the snack industry grapples with changing consumer behaviors and economic pressures, PepsiCo's "unshrinkflation" strategy marks a significant shift. Whether it's enough to satisfy consumer hunger for value remains to be seen, but it's certainly food for thought for brands across the industry. Want to dig deeper into consumer trends and how they're reshaping the snack market? At Seeds, we're here to help you navigate these crunchy challenges and find your path to sustainable growth. Gen Z's Appetite for Luxury Groceries Continues to Grow

Note: The podcast version of this newsletter is generated using Google’s Notebook LM technology. The voices and the script of the podcast are AI-generated, based on our content. As inflation bites into budgets, a surprising trend is emerging: Gen Z is splurging on high-end groceries. From $19 celebrity-endorsed smoothies to artisanal tinned fish, young consumers are turning their shopping carts into status symbols. But will this appetite for gourmet groceries continue, or is it just a flash in the pan? Let's unpack this trend: The Grocery Glow-Up: Gen Z's New Status Symbol Market Growth: * Gen Z and millennials plan to splurge more on groceries than on dining out, travel, or fitness (McKinsey, February 2024). * Gen Z customers outspend all other generations at premium grocery stores like Erewhon (Bank of America, June 2024). Driving Factors: * Health consciousness: 70% of Gen Z respondents are willing to pay more for high-quality foods (YouGov survey for Whole Foods). * Affordability compared to traditional luxury items: A $53 box of croissant-shaped cereal is more attainable than a $2,000 handbag - but both are positioned as tastemaker items. * Social media influence: Grocery hauls and aesthetically pleasing food content dominate platforms like TikTok and Instagram. The Erewhon Effect: * The upscale Los Angeles grocery chain sells thousands of $19 smoothies monthly. * Erewhon reported $171 million in profit last year, with 4x the revenue per square foot of competitors. * Celebrity collaborations on smoothies (e.g., Hailey Bieber, Bella Hadid) drive viral social media content. Challenges: * Rising food costs may eventually force budget cutbacks. * Potential market saturation of premium grocery options. * Risk of "health-washing" as more brands position themselves as healthy alternatives. What's the probability that Gen Z's luxury grocery trend will continue? We estimate an 82% probability that Gen Z's enthusiasm for premium groceries will persist in the near future. Here's why: * Strong market growth and consistent demand from young consumers. * The trend aligns with broader health and wellness priorities. * Social media continues to drive discovery and aspiration in the food space. * Premium groceries offer an accessible form of luxury for a generation facing economic challenges. * Brands and retailers are heavily investing in catering to this demographic. However, economic pressures and potential market saturation could pose challenges to sustained growth. So What? How to Leverage the Luxury Grocery Trend: * Product Innovation: Develop unique, health-focused products that cater to Gen Z's desire for premium experiences. * Social Media Strategy: Create visually appealing packaging and in-store experiences that encourage user-generated content. * Keep it rare: Create limited-edition products or curated selections. * Emphasize Transparency: Clearly communicate the quality and sourcing of ingredients to justify premium pricing. * Diversify Price Points: Offer a range of premium options to capture different segments of the Gen Z market. Next Steps: The luxury grocery trend presents significant opportunities for brands and retailers. To capitalize on this shift, it's crucial to understand the nuances of Gen Z's preferences and values. 6 Seeds specializes in helping businesses navigate emerging food trends. Key insights on the protein trends

Protein, protein, protein. Consumers can’t get enough of high-protein products. But will this movement last? We're giving our prediction on whether the high-protein trend is here to stay or if it's about to exit the stage of consumer preferences. So the question is: Is the protein wave about to recede, or are we looking at a continuation of a protein-powered surge that will continue to reshape our food landscape? Let's break it down - the protein reality: Overconsumption: Americans are consuming protein at unprecedented levels - on average twice the recommended daily intake. Remarkably, despite this, 60% of U.S. adults are still looking to increase their protein consumption. This suggests a strong, ongoing demand for high-protein options, often driven by influencers in nutrition, weight loss, and fitness. (Personal hot take: Many of these suggest far more protein than is needed, or even good for the average person. Speaking generally, if you want a better diet, add fiber.) Plant-Based Challenges: There are interesting developments in the plant-based sector. Plant-based meat sales experienced a significant decrease, dropping 12% in 2023. This raises questions about the future viability of vegetable-based protein alternatives. Dairy Alternative Stability: While plant-based meat might be struggling, plant-based milk is holding steady with a modest 1% increase. This indicates that not all plant-based proteins are facing the same challenges. Novel Source Challenges: Insect-based proteins are attempting to enter the market, but consumer acceptance remains low. Only about 20% of consumers express willingness to try these options and tbh, we’re surprised it’s that high. Novel protein sources still face significant hurdles in gaining widespread acceptance. Global Protein Trends: The protein trend isn't confined to the U.S. In Europe, there's growing acceptance of alternative proteins, particularly in urban areas. This points to a global shift in protein consumption patterns. So, what's the outlook for the high-protein trend? Here are our key takeaways: * The demand for protein remains strong, driven by perceived health benefits and ongoing marketing efforts. * Consumer preferences are becoming more nuanced. Quality, sustainability, and innovation are increasingly important factors in protein choices. * Plant-based proteins are facing challenges but are likely to adapt and evolve to meet changing consumer demands. * The future of protein is diverse. We're likely to see a wider range of protein sources gaining traction in the market. * Health-conscious consumers continue to be a driving force behind this trend, associating high protein intake with overall wellness. We’re giving the continuation of the high protein trend a tentative 75% This seems reasonable given the strong consumer demand for protein and the growth in various global high-protein food markets. The decline in plant-based meat sales and resistance to certain high-protein foods are notable but do not outweigh the overall positive trends. The base rate of high-protein trends continuing in recent years supports a high probability, and the specific challenges justify a slight downwards adjustment.
