With the Royal Navy firmly in control of the North Atlantic, a well-prepared defense could use the peninsula as a bottleneck to hold off large enemy forces, much like a mountain pass or river crossing. With enough preparation, the British and Portuguese might be able to hold on to Lisbon almost indefinitely, even if all the rest of Iberia fell under French occupation.
