Are Video Games Ruining the Fun? Spoilers, Twitch, Dopamine & the Death of Discovery
Are we seeing too much of video games before we actually play them?
In this episode of the Arcade Lunch Legends podcast, we dive into the way modern gaming has changed the experience of discovery. From Twitch streams and YouTube gameplay to social media clips, trailers, reviews, spoilers, and endless pre-release footage, are gamers losing something that made games special?
We talk about playing Control in preparation for Control Resonant, and how going into a game knowing almost nothing can make the experience much more exciting. We compare that feeling to games like Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon, Death Stranding, Uncharted, and Elden Ring.
Then we go back to the Blockbuster era, when a game box, a few screenshots, a magazine, and word of mouth were basically all you had. No endless gameplay videos. No spoiler clips. No Twitch streams. No social media telling you what to expect.
We also discuss GTA 6, Wolverine, God of War: Læfey, Star Wars Galactic Racer, Fortnite, Call of Duty, Metal Gear Solid, Tetris, and how modern games use dopamine, rewards, tutorials, maps, waypoints, and hand-holding.
Are modern games giving us too much information?
Does watching gameplay before playing actually make games less exciting?
Was the old-school gaming experience better because you had to discover everything yourself?
And has Fortnite helped create the modern era of constant dopamine hits, microtransactions, crossovers, and increasingly flashy gameplay?
We also debate how much information developers should reveal before launch. Show too much and you spoil the experience. Show too little and players may not buy the game.
