The Art of Becoming is a storytelling podcast hosted by Jean Keane.
Every episode begins with a true story—about people, creativity, community, home, and belonging.
Some stories will make you smile.
Some may make you think.
Others might remind you of someone you've forgotten, or help you see yourself a little differently.
They're simply stories from a life lived paying attention.
I sent a jacket photo to my daughters and granddaughter and asked, “Should I buy this?” Their different reactions got me thinking: was I asking for an opinion—or permission? In this episode, I explore why we look for reassurance when we already know what we want, and how to listen to the people we love without losing our own voice.

The Road We Already Know
Why do we remain in situations we know are no longer serving us? We think about changing. We talk about changing. We may even complain about the same things again and again—yet we stay exactly where we are. In this reflection, Jean explores fear, the stories we mistake for facts, and the unsettling truth that doing nothing is still a decision. At some point, we must ask ourselves: Are we choosing the road we’re on, or are we simply afraid to take the turn?

Why Don’t You Retire?
Why do we treat retirement like a deadline?
In this episode, I talk about the quiet ageism behind the question, “Why don’t you retire?” and the assumptions we make about work, ambition, purpose, and aging.
Retirement is personal. Some people are ready to step away. Others are still building, creating, learning, and beginning something new.
Maybe the better question isn’t, “Why are you still working?”

Why I Call It The Art of Becoming
Someone recently asked me why I call this podcast The Art of Becoming.
I thought the answer was obvious. Then I realized I had never really stopped to explain it.
This episode is about putting yourself out there, learning to care a little less about being judged, and spending less time trying to figure everyone else out.
We are all becoming something, all the time.
And maybe the real work is paying attention to our own becoming.

Plant the Seed
Sometimes I rush because I want to get started. Other times I overthink so much that I never begin.
A few zinnia seeds reminded me that both can get in the way.
In this episode of The Art of Becoming, I’m reflecting on patience, effort, trial and error, and the balance between planning carefully and simply starting.
Because if you never plant the seed, you never get the flowers.

What Am I Making Room For?
Retirement, downsizing, health, and change can sound like separate conversations, but I think they’re all connected.
At some point, life stops being only about building and accumulating, and we begin to ask different questions. What do I still want? What am I ready to let go of? And how do I want the next chapter of my life to feel?
In this episode of The Art of Becoming, I’m reflecting on change, gratitude, the emotional side of downsizing, and why getting older can also mean making more room for what matters most.

Looking Young or Feeling Alive?
As I get closer to 64, I’ve been thinking about the difference between looking young and feeling young.
I don’t mind aging nearly as much as I mind not feeling like myself. And while I don’t think there is anything wrong with Botox, fillers, facelifts, or choosing to do nothing at all, I do think it’s worth

The 72nd Floor
A friend from my hometown posted that he had reached the 72nd floor.
At first, I didn’t understand what he meant.
Then it clicked.
He had turned 72.
That one little phrase completely changed the way I looked at life.
What if life really is a high-rise? What if we spend too much time climbing, looking up, and waiting for the next floor without stopping to notice the view from the one we’re on?
In this episode of The Art of Becoming, I reflect on aging, perspective, and the strange truth that none of us knows how many floors our building has.
Maybe the goal isn’t to reach the penthouse.
Maybe it’s to really live on the floor we’re on.

What Do I Want for Myself Now?
It’s easy to get caught up in doing — work, responsibilities, routines, taking care of everyone and everything around us.
But every once in a while, it’s worth stopping long enough to ask a simple question: What do I want for myself now?
In this episode, I’m thinking about routine, change, and the quiet moments when we realize that what once worked for us may not be what we want anymore.

The Flowers Weren’t Dead
What if the parts of us that seem to be fading still have life left in them? In this heartfelt episode, I share a simple moment with flowers that completely changed how I see aging, creativity, and new beginnings. Even in our sixties (and beyond), some of the most beautiful things are just starting to bloom.
A gentle reminder that change isn’t the same as ending

The Bridge We Stop Seeing
A walk across San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge became a quiet reminder that we often stop noticing the things that faithfully carry us through life simply because they're always there.
In this episode, Jean reflects on beauty, time, gratitude, and why looking a little closer can change the way we see the people, places, and even ourselves.
Sometimes the most extraordinary stories are hiding in plain sight.

The Girls Trip That Wasn’t Supposed to Be
It started with a forgotten pair of earphones and four and a half hours on a plane with nothing to listen to.
But somewhere between San Diego and Orlando, the silence became something else.
In this episode of The Art of Becoming, I reflect on the unexpected gift of stillness, the thoughts that surface when we stop distracting ourselves, and a family trip that quietly became more meaningful than I expected.
Sometimes the moments we do not plan are the ones that stay with us.

The Art of Second Acts
What if your greatest work isn't behind you?
For so many of us, life doesn't follow the path we imagined. Careers change. Children grow up. Doors close. New ones quietly open.
In this episode of The Art of Becoming, I share why I believe second acts aren't about starting over—they're about becoming more of who we've always been. From real estate to art, yoga, podcasting, and building community, I've learned that reinvention isn't reserved for the young. It's available to anyone willing to say yes to what's next.
If you've ever wondered whether it's too late to pursue a dream, make a change, or begin again, this episode is for you.
Because sometimes the most meaningful chapter of your life... is the one you haven't written yet.

More Than a Lecture
When two women walked into one of my workshops, they thought they were there for a lecture.
Instead, they found themselves breathing, creating, laughing, and connecting with complete strangers.
In this episode, I reflect on what happened that day and why I believe some of life's most meaningful lessons aren't taught from the front of a room—they're discovered through experience.
It's a story about creativity, belonging, and the unexpected ways we learn from one another.
Because sometimes we don't need more information.
We simply need an invitation to participate.
Thank you for spending a few minutes with me.

The Boy and the Hammer- My friend Toby
Most people think Toby is my grandson.
He's always quick to correct them.
"No," he'll say. "She's my best friend."
In this episode, I share the story of how an unexpected friendship began on my very first day at an art gallery—with a hammer, a hole in the wall, and a little boy who changed my life in ways I never could have imagined.
Over the past nineteen months, Toby has reminded me that friendship doesn't have an age limit, creativity belongs to everyone, and sometimes the people who leave the biggest mark on our lives arrive when we least expect them.
Thanks for spending a few minutes with me.

A Stranger at Sunrise
In the first episode of The Art of Becoming, I share a chance encounter that reminded me how powerful human connection can be.
While attending a training in Glendale, California, I woke before dawn and drove to Pasadena City Hall to photograph the sunrise. What began as a quiet morning with my camera turned into an unexpected conversation with a stranger.
We talked about life, creativity, community, and the small moments that often stay with us longer than the milestones.
This story is about paying attention, staying curious, and remaining open to the people we meet along the way.
Thank you for joining me on this journey.
