When was the last time you fully enjoyed a meal?🧐
Happy Friday! Meals aren’t just another item on your to-do list—they’re a privilege and a joy. Some foods have the power to trigger the best memories (science agrees!), which makes eating a meaningful way to build resilience. So here’s your friendly reminder: meals can actually help regulate your nervous system and support your stress response throughout the day. And hey—while you're at it, toss in some colorful, nutrient-dense goodness (wink wink). If you have a chronic illness… Eating can be relegated to either something we have to do and we have lost pleasure in savoring our meals all together. This is normal but it doesn’t have to be. Recovering this joy is a very powerful tool to shift the course of our physical and our mental health. Maybe you’re living with a chronic illness that makes it tough to enjoy meals like “normal” folks do—and I see you. Working with a nutritionist to identify foods that won’t trigger pain, discomfort, or flares can make a big difference. That’s why I’m sharing this amazing evidence-based resource (https://youtu.be/Z61921PImhc?si=WsdowvExY-ydV2_6) to help support and empower your healing journey. 💛 P.S. Did you know that if you download the Substack app, you’ll unlock access to chats and extra podcast goodies? Just sayin’. 👀 If this topic interested you… Here’s an amazing video I used back in my teaching days during the nutrition module. It’s not just about being mindful with your food—it’s a powerful tool to help us recognize the deeper dysfunctions and habits that often show up at the table. 🍽️ Worth a watch if you're ready to shift the way you think about eating. How to Use Mindfulness in Eating by Headspace (https://youtu.be/u1jRaHrpokA?si=Htb7SIlTBb65hb7B) Here’s a helpful article written by nutritionists on the matter if you want to dive deeper: Mindful Eating 101 — A Beginner’s Guide (https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/mindful-eating-guide) And if you missed on the video I linked if you have IBS, you will find it below: The Gut Doctor: The root cause of IBS – and how to treat it | Dr. Will Bulsiewicz (https://youtu.be/Z61921PImhc?si=WsdowvExY-ydV2_6) This is a public episode. When prayer is not enough...
If you’re an abuse survivor, navigating grief, or living with a chronic illness, I hope this episode moves you to action. Prayer is powerful. For those of you that are Jewish or Christian, it’s not just important—it’s essential to our spiritual well-being. But I firmly believe that prayer is meant to complement, not replace, the understanding G-d has given us about how our bodies respond to trauma and how we heal. For years, I lived under the belief that prayer alone would restore my body. Instead, that mindset kept me trapped in shame and inaction. But G-d has given us insight into our nervous system—how trauma hijacks it, shaping our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. In this episode, I share my journey of breaking free from silence, embracing healing, and finally speaking up. Let’s dive in. Follow the podcast on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/theartofresiliencepodcast?igsh=MXkwMGM3Z2k3Y3M4Zg%3D%3D&utm_source=qr) and help me spread the word. Recovering Joy & Purpose
Important Disclaimer: None of the information in this podcast, my social media or website is meant to treat a medical condition or supplement the vital role healthcare practitioners have. My work is only meant to encourage you to seek help from these experts. I only share my experience as a person and patient. As I plan content for the podcast, I find myself sifting through the archives of my life—old notes, journals, mementos. I’m interviewing my parents, asking high school friends questions, and, little by little, patterns are beginning to emerge. It stings to admit this, but even in the moments I thought I was my “happiest” over the past 24 years—serving others, traveling, staying super busy—I looked different to others than I imagined myself. I did. In the early stages of my illness, when I was still a pure extrovert and a crazy strong leader, friends noticed I was pulling away, retreating into myself. They couldn’t pinpoint why. It was physical pain. Looking back at my journals, I saw how I “lost purpose” around the time I graduated college. By the time I was working in nonprofit organizations, I clearly remember a dear friend saying to me, “Jaasiel, my prayer is that the L-rd would return to you the years of your youth and renew your strength.” I thought, “What the heck?! Do I really look that old and old and lost?” 😅 Years later, I saw photos of myself from that time—hunched over, looking oddly fragile and unstable. Good heavens! This was hard to swallow—I must admit—it was really hard to see myself in pictures. Those were all signs that something wasn’t okay with me—I was merely surviving. My body hunched unconsciously, trying to protect itself from the pain. Though I pushed through with a smile, put on makeup, and burned every last drop of adrenaline to appear “normal,” it still showed. Worse yet, deep inside, I knew I had lost my joy and purpose. I was battling depression, deep sadness and loss over dreams and hope. Did you know the Art of Resilience Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-art-of-resilience-podcast/id1788536063) & Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/62miDbVMehFKO9j3BscU02)? Here’s the thing about chronic illness: one of its many silver linings (yes, there’s more than one) is that it ages you—not just physically, but emotionally. You bury dreams so fast it’s dizzying. I’ve had a mid-life crisis… twice! But on the flip side, you learn lessons and mature faster than most people. You figure out what really matters and learn to value it deeply—often much sooner than others. To my dearest sister from another mother, who prayed that heartfelt prayer for me so many years ago: G-d has heard you. Havah, thank you!. 🥰 In this episode, I dive deep into the importance of reclaiming purpose and joy when living with chronic illness. I also explore the concept of neuroplasticity, which has revolutionized the treatment of chronic pain. Our brains can be rewired, our thought patterns do matter, and recovering joy and purpose—whether you’re living with a chronic illness or not—is absolutely possible. All of us struggle with something, you don’t have to be sick to battle something. Our past, trauma, our fears and apprehensions, comparing ourselves against others. So I want to offer you a challenge, to know whatever the thoughts that hunt you deep inside, these can be turned around. Recovering and having a deep sense of purpose and joy is something we cannot afford to ignore. Humans are like diamonds. We were made with multifaceted beauty. Tragedy, sickness, and even depression is part of the human experience. When tragedy and sickness strikes, remember, we are not just one thing. There’s treasures untold inside all of us and it is up to us to discover what our Creator put inside us, that multifaceted diamond is waiting for you to discover and rejoice in it. Let’s do it! What are your non-negotiables?
So, you have a chronic illness…and thinking about 2025 resolutions feels completely out of reach. Your life and body feel so tangled that it’s hard to even know where to start. I’ve been there, my friend. I understand the overwhelm and anguish of starting a new year feeling lost in the chaos. I’ve crossed the threshold of New Year’s Eve with disappointment and despair, and I’ve also crossed it with hopeful determination, thinking, “This year will be different.” Yet time and again, I’ve watched my resolutions fade into the same fog that’s been part of my life for decades. If you have struggled with suicidal ideation, please call 988. This is the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. There is help! I believe, that everyone, even when suicide is a far contemplation, there is a desire to live. I won’t claim to have all the answers, so I am inviting G-d in this post to speak the words I cannot speak to you directly but I’ve discovered one approach that has brought clarity and steadiness when the fog rolls in again—when pain, symptoms, and feelings of failure and shame try to take over. And I want to share it with you. This past year, 2024, was incredibly hard. But despite that, I accomplished so much. Now, I want to give you a tool and a mindset that helped me experience progress and see my goals move forward—no matter the pace. It was truly life-changing. Let’s dive in together, and don’t forget to download the accompanying guide here! If you’ve gone through the guide and found it helpful, I’d love to hear from you! Leave a comment in our Substack community or send me an email at hello@brevedesignco.com. What is on the “Define Your Emotional Non-Negotiables: A Guide for Thriving in 2025” ? This 4-step guide (15 pages long) helps individuals with chronic illness identify and honor their emotional non-negotiables for the year ahead. It has taken me 24 years to create something that worked for me and I created it thinking about fellow chronic illness folks. Through reflection, prioritization, and actionable planning, you’ll uncover what truly matters to you—whether it’s creativity, rest, or connection—and create space for it in your daily life. With prompts to overcome fears, clear mental and physical clutter, and set realistic goals, this guide is designed to help you navigate the challenges of chronic illness with clarity, purpose, and hope. Myself or the illness...
In this episode, I want to share with you seven commitment goals that have been essential to my journey of self-recovery and steadily climbing out of a dark chapter in my life. Each of these goals stems from one core principle: a strong personal commitment to discovering and expressing who I truly am versus allowing the illness define my path and limit all possibilities. Those of us living with chronic illness know this inner battle all too well. We try countless supplements, techniques, therapies, and medications. We've probably visited over a dozen practitioners and still keep several in our medical arsenal. We fight, fight, fight! But that’s not were the battle is won! The battle is won in the inner chambers of our hearts and minds. Was I going to sit depressed, and allow the illness to ravage my body, mind, and future. No! IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: The friend referred to in this podcast gave me his permission to share his journey. He knows where I am coming from and he’s been with me in similar valleys of my battle with chronic illness. These seven practices aren’t a cure. They won’t guarantee perfect days, but they are deeply tied to my physical well-being, mental health, spiritual walk, and most importantly, they are my declaration of war against the harsh verdicts of illness. So join me as I share my journey. And please, leave a comment! What are your commitment goals? Why do you do them, and what do they look like for you? Can’t wait to hear from you!-xoxo, Jaasiel! Cultivating connections
In this first episode I want to share how I have found connection in the most unexpected of ways. During 24 years of battling a chronic illness I went from being a loud extrovert to being an introvert. This is something that is expected-our symptoms and aches and pains take much of our energy reservoir. Who wants to hang out when you are trying to survive? And yet, we need connection to be able to endure, build resilience, and see possibilities outside of our stress-driven world. We need to be encouraged and challenged. This is just the essence of being human. We cannot afford to be alone and isolated. Don’t get me wrong, I am still an introvert, being around people drains me but I know that opening up to others around a topic I love and matters to me like art and connecting with neighbors has given me a sense of belonging and has helped accelerate my healing. Join me as I give you tips and ideas on how to find meaningful connections that can catalyze healing. This is a public episode.
