The Artist Behind the Surgeon: How Art Shapes Dr. Spiro’s Vision

Long before the operating room, Dr. Scott Spiro was an artist. In this episode, Dr. Spiro takes listeners inside the creative foundation that has shaped his entire life and surgical career. He traces his artistic journey from studying art alongside pre-med, to early inspirations like photographer Berenice Abbott and the book Lost New York, which taught him the power of perspective, contrast, and seeing familiar structures in unexpected ways. Dr. Spiro walks through key bodies of his work - paintings and drawings that explore architecture, bridges, reflections, light, and extreme perspective. From watercolor cityscapes in Budapest and Amsterdam to oil paintings that bend light across glass, water, and steel, he explains how mundane subjects become captivating when perspective is pushed and light is manipulated. He revisits deeply personal pieces, including pencil drawings created over 40 years ago as an art major, pop art inspired by his daughter that launched his gallery representation, and oil portraits of his son painted during a trip to Chicago. The episode also explores his acclaimed Reflections series, graphite and silvered graphite works, and his fascination with “up perspective” as a way to ground scale, structure, and human presence. The conversation culminates with Dr. Spiro’s invitation to Art Basel Miami in 2018, where he was commissioned to paint a massive mural honoring the human body: an intersection of beauty, strength, anatomy, and artistic vision that mirrors his work as a plastic surgeon. This episode offers rare insight into how an artist’s eye informs surgical judgment, aesthetic balance, and the pursuit of natural, timeless results revealing why art and surgery have never been separate worlds for Dr. Spiro.

Botox, Done Right: Expert Injection Strategy, Safety, and Natural Results

Botox is one of the most powerful tools in aesthetic medicine, but only when it’s done correctly. In this episode, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Scott Spiro sits down with Nurse Practitioner Mikayla to break down the science, artistry, and safety behind modern Botox and injectable treatments. Together, they explain how expert injectors evaluate facial movement, muscle balance, and anatomy to soften lines while preserving natural expression. The conversation covers far more than forehead wrinkles. You’ll learn how Botox can be used to treat neck bands, gummy smiles, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and brow positioning along with when injectables are the right solution and when surgery may be the better long-term option. Dr. Spiro and Mikayla also address growing concerns around DIY Botox and social-media injection trends, explaining why purchasing injectables online and following TikTok “maps” can lead to serious complications. They discuss microdosing techniques for the brows, Botox for men, and why the idea of a “frozen face” is outdated when injections are performed with precision and restraint. Whether you’re considering injectables or simply want to understand what separates expert-level treatment from everything else, this episode delivers clear education, honest myth-busting, and medically sound guidance.
