[211][212] Pulsar timing reveals stellar trio - An apparently fast-slowing pulsar turned out to be part of a rare system containing a neutron star, a white dwarf and a Sun-like star. Keywords: pulsar, neutron star, white dwarf, triple-star system. [136] Big Bang helium measured precisely - Astronomers measured primordial helium with record precision, providing a stronger test of models describing the first five minutes after the Big Bang. Keywords: primordial helium, Big Bang, cosmology, early universe. [61] Exploded stars enriched galactic center - Webb observations indicate that gas around Sagittarius A-star contains elements probably deposited by past supernova explosions. Keywords: Sagittarius A-star, Milky Way, supernovae, metal-rich gas. [166][171] Episode Transcript Interstellar comet loses its surface We begin with interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, an object that formed beyond our Solar System and traveled through interstellar space before passing the Sun. Researchers have estimated how much material solar heating removed during that encounter. Gas-loss measurements suggest the equivalent of several meters of surface may have disappeared. If the comet also shed large quantities of dust, the total erosion could have been considerably deeper. That does not mean every part of the surface was worn down evenly, and the calculations do not yet prove that untouched material was exposed. Still, the possibility matters. Cosmic radiation can alter the exterior of an object during a journey lasting millions or even billions of years. Removing that weathered layer could reveal material that preserves a clearer chemical record of the planetary system where the comet formed. In other words, the Sun may have helped peel back part of this interstellar messenger’s travel-worn skin. [151] Japan launches Mars moon mission Turning to planetary exploration, Japan’s Martian Moons eXploration spacecraft, better known as MMX, has successfully started its journey toward Mars. The mission lifted off aboard an H3 rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center and separated from the rocket as planned. MMX will investigate both of Mars’s small moons, Phobos and Deimos, with particular attention on Phobos. The spacecraft is expected to orbit that moon, examine its surface and attempt to collect material for return to Earth in 2031. If successful, it will be the first mission to bring samples back from the Mars system and the first to return material from Phobos. Scientists hope those samples will...

Keywords: JAXA, MMX, Mars, Phobos, sample return. [151] Euclid Finds Its First Comet - ESA’s Euclid telescope discovered C/2026 S1, the first previously unknown comet found in its images. The unexpected detection shows how a dark-universe observatory can also uncover nearby Solar System objects. Keywords: Euclid, comet, C/2026 S1, ESA, astronomy. [331] Webb Maps Metal-Rich Galactic Gas - James Webb observations revealed metal-rich gas around Sagittarius A*, the Milky Way’s central black hole. Its composition may preserve evidence of stellar explosions and the shared history of stars and gas in the galactic center. Keywords: JWST, Sagittarius A*, black hole, Milky Way, metals. [271] Starfall Flies Again on Bandwagon - The Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission carried dozens of spacecraft, including the second Starfall return-capsule flight. The mission highlights growing efforts to bring research and manufactured materials home from orbit. Keywords: Starfall, Bandwagon-5, Falcon 9, reentry, space manufacturing. [181] Rocket Debris Lands Near Indonesians - Indonesian authorities are investigating large debris found near homes and plantation work sites in Central Kalimantan. Preliminary tracking suggests it may have come from a Chinese Zhuque-2E rocket. Keywords: space debris, Indonesia, Zhuque-2E, reentry, safety. [316] Minor Solar Storm Watch Today - NOAA forecasts a possible minor G1 geomagnetic storm as fast solar wind from a coronal hole reaches Earth. High-latitude auroras may become more active, although storm conditions are not guaranteed. Keywords: solar storm, aurora, space weather, coronal hole, NOAA. [406] Episode Transcript Japan’s MMX Begins Phobos Journey Japan’s Martian Moons eXploration spacecraft, better known as MMX, has successfully started its journey toward Mars. An H3 rocket lifted off from the Tanegashima Space Center, and Japan’s space agency later confirmed that the probe had separated as planned, established contact and was operating normally. MMX is heading for Phobos, the larger of Mars’ two small moons. After reaching the Martian system, it will study both Phobos and Deimos, deploy a small rover and attempt to collect material from Phobos for return to Earth. If the full mission succeeds, it will complete the first round trip to the region around Mars. The samples could reveal whether Phobos formed from debris after a major impact on Mars or began as an asteroid later captured by the planet. That distinction matters because each possibility tells a different story about how the inner Solar System developed and how material moved between young planets. Euclid Finds Its First Comet Elsewhere in the Solar System, Europe’s Euclid space telescope has made an unexpected discovery. Euclid was built primarily to study distant galaxies, dark matter and dark energy, but software searching its images for moving objects spotted a previously unknown comet. It has now been named C/2026 S1, or Euclid. The comet appeared as a faint streak across observations collected in September, and follow-up work helped confirm i...

A coffee keeps it going: theautomateddaily.com/support Please support this podcast by checking out our sponsors: - Invest Like the Pros with StockMVP - https://www.stock-mvp.com/?via=ron - Discover the Future of AI Audio with ElevenLabs - https://try.elevenlabs.io/tad - Lindy is your ultimate AI assistant that proactively manages your inbox - https://try.lindy.ai/tad Today's topics: Japan targets Mars moon samples - Japan’s MMX spacecraft is scheduled to begin a mission to study Phobos and Deimos and return the first sample from the Martian system. Scientists hope Phobos material will reveal how Mars’s moons formed and how water and organic compounds moved through the early solar system. [182] Florida rideshare launch weather delay - Poor weather in the Falcon 9 booster recovery zone forced SpaceX to postpone the Bandwagon-5 rideshare launch until October 20. The mission includes multiple small satellites and another demonstration of the uncrewed Starfall orbital reentry capsule. [46] Public hunts hidden black holes - The Black Hole Hunters citizen-science project is asking volunteers to examine NASA TESS observations for signs of otherwise invisible stellar-mass black holes. Nearly 23,000 participants have already completed more than 12 million classifications. [243] Fast solar wind approaches Earth - A fast stream of solar wind from a coronal hole is expected to reach Earth around October 19 and 20. Forecasters say it could produce a minor geomagnetic storm and strengthen auroras at high latitudes. [226][228] Orionid meteor shower nears peak - The Orionid meteor shower, produced by debris from Halley’s Comet, is approaching its October 21 peak. Moonlight will hide many faint meteors, but darker conditions before dawn may still offer worthwhile viewing. [272] Episode Transcript Japan targets Mars moon samples We begin with Japan’s Martian Moons eXploration mission, better known as MMX. The spacecraft is scheduled to launch from Tanegashima Space Center later today, riding aboard an H3 rocket on a journey toward Mars. MMX is not going to land on Mars itself. Instead, it will investigate the planet’s two small moons, Phobos and Deimos, with most of its attention focused on Phobos. After arriving in the Martian system next year, the spacecraft is expected to spend an extended period observing the moons and examining their surroundings. It will also deploy a small European rover and attempt to collect material from the surface of Phobos. The plan is to send that material back to Earth in 2031. No mission has ever returned a sample from Mars or either of its moons, so even a modest amount would be scientifically valuable. The central question is where Phobos and Deimos came from. They may be captured asteroids, or they may have formed from debris thrown into orbit after a large object struck Mars. Those possibilities tell very different stories about the planet’s past. The returned material could also preserve evidence of how water and carbon-rich compounds moved around the young solar system. In other words, MMX is targeting a small moon to investigate some very large questions. Florida rideshare launch weather delay In Florida, meanwhile, the Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission will remain on the ground for another day. SpaceX canceled Monday morning’s Falcon 9 launch attempt because of poor conditions in the booster recovery area over the Atlantic. The company is now targeting Tuesday morning. This is a useful reminder that launch weather involves more than conditions directly above the pad. A rocket may have clear skies at Cape Canaveral and still be delayed if winds or seas make the planned recovery unsafe farther downra...
