The World's Most Expensive F*CK UPS! Billion-Dollar Mistakes, NASA Disasters & Epic Failures | BBN Ep. 41
What's the most expensive mistake you've ever made? A hundred bucks? A thousand? Maybe you accidentally cost your company a few grand? Well, at least you didn't lose $900 MILLION with one banking transaction. 🤣 Episode 41 has Kyle and Nick back in the Podcast Bunker, and tonight we're exploring the world's most expensive fuck ups, where tiny mistakes turn into catastrophic financial disasters. But first, we crack open the Global Trash Can Report! Michigan's beautiful fall days are giving way to chilly nights, and we've got unfinished business: Who won Fat Bear Week 2026? From Alaska's heavyweight bears, we head into Russian diesel, sanctions, energy markets, and the bizarre economics of international conflict. If nations are geopolitical adversaries, why are they still doing business together? Then we discuss age limits for elected officials, reports of cyberattacks targeting hundreds of European grocery refrigeration systems, and allegations circulating around Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. As always, there's plenty to question and a difference between allegations and established facts. We slam the dumpster lid shut, take a Dubby Energy break, and Kyle asks the Belligerent Nation to keep those votes rolling in for USA's Next Top Host 2026! 🏆 Vote here: https://tophost.org/2026/kyle-slominski (https://tophost.org/2026/kyle-slominski) Then it's time for tonight's main event: THE WORLD'S MOST EXPENSIVE FUCK UPS! Kyle and Nick share some of their own professional disasters before examining five spectacular examples of human error, technical failure, and decisions that cost fortunes. FUCK UP #1 — NASA'S $125 MILLION UNIT-CONVERSION DISASTER The Mars Climate Orbiter was lost because one team used imperial measurements while another expected metric. A simple mismatch. An entire spacecraft gone. FUCK UP #2 — KNIGHT CAPITAL'S $440 MILLION MELTDOWN A software deployment goes horribly wrong, and an automated trading system burns through approximately $440 million in just 45 minutes. That's nearly $10 million PER MINUTE. FUCK UP #3 — CITIBANK'S $900 MILLION PAYMENT MISTAKE Imagine accidentally sending almost a billion dollars to the wrong recipients. Now imagine trying to get it back. One of banking's most infamous operational disasters. FUCK UP #4 — THE ROCKET THAT LASTED 37 SECONDS In 1996, the Ariane 5 rocket self-destructed shortly after launch because of a software failure involving numerical conversion. Years of development. Hundreds of millions of dollars. Gone before the first minute. FUCK UP #5 — EVER GIVEN: THE SHIP THAT BLOCKED THE WORLD A roughly 1,300-foot container ship gets wedged sideways in the Suez Canal, bringing one of the world's most important shipping routes to a standstill for six days. Billions in global trade delayed daily. And freeing it required a combination of dredging, tugboats, engineering, and a little help from Mother Nature. After a Deemed Fit break, we wrap up the disasters, somehow detour into Tesla's rumored flying-car ambitions, and ask what all five failures have in common. Sometimes the smallest oversight creates the biggest consequences. And sometimes the difference between an ordinary bad day and a billion-dollar disaster is one line of code, one wrong number, or one really unfortunate decision. Stay curious. Stay skeptical. UNSOLVED MYSTERIES: D.B. Cooper, Amelia Earhart, Voynich Manuscript & Mary Celeste | BBN Ep. 40
FILTHY FORTY, BABYYY! 40 episodes. Countless rabbit holes. And we're STILL asking more questions than we're answering. Kyle and Nick are back in the Podcast Bunker for Episode 40 of the Belligerent Broadcast Network, and tonight we're cracking open four of history's greatest unsolved mysteries. But first, the Global Trash Can Report! We start with the internet absolutely losing its mind over the appearance of Michael Dell's wife during a major philanthropic announcement alongside President Trump. Naturally, the internet has theories. Then it's off to Panama for reports of massive earthquakes and aftershocks, before meeting Jonathan, the nearly 194-year-old tortoise living on St. Helena. Imagine everything you could witness in nearly two centuries! And speaking of history, another million-dollar expedition is setting out in search of Amelia Earhart's missing aircraft. Will they finally uncover aviation history or spend a fortune investigating a tree? After a Dubby Energy break, Kyle makes a shameless request to the Belligerent Nation: 🏆 VOTE KYLE FOR USA'S NEXT TOP HOST! https://tophost.org/2026/kyle-slominski (https://tophost.org/2026/kyle-slominski) Every vote counts, and your support genuinely means the world! Then it's time to open the UNSOLVED FILES. FILE #1: AMELIA EARHART — VANISHED IN 1937 One of aviation's greatest pioneers disappears over the Pacific Ocean, leaving behind nearly 90 years of searches, conflicting evidence, and conspiracy theories. Did she crash into the ocean? Survive on a remote island? Or was there something more to her disappearance? FILE #2: D.B. COOPER — THE MAN WHO VANISHED INTO THIN AIR A hijacked Boeing 727. $200,000 in ransom. Four parachutes. After releasing the passengers, Cooper orders the aircraft back into the sky, opens the rear staircase, and jumps into the darkness with a bag full of cash. Was he a criminal mastermind, incredibly lucky, or a man who never survived the jump? And why did the FBI suspend its active investigation in 2016? FILE #3: THE VOYNICH MANUSCRIPT — THE BOOK NOBODY CAN READ A roughly 600-year-old manuscript filled with mysterious writing, strange plants, astronomical illustrations, and diagrams that have puzzled researchers for generations. A forgotten language? Elaborate medieval hoax? Secret scientific knowledge? We've developed artificial intelligence and quantum computers, yet this centuries-old book still refuses to give up its secrets. 📂 FILE #4: THE MARY CELESTE — THE GHOST SHIP A merchant ship leaves New York bound for Europe. Weeks later, it's discovered drifting in the Atlantic. The ship is still afloat. The cargo remains. But all ten people aboard have vanished. Pirates? A dangerous cargo scare? A disastrous decision to abandon ship? And no, this one didn't even happen in the Bermuda Triangle! Four mysteries. Centuries of investigations. Countless theories. And not one universally accepted, conclusive answer. Maybe that's what makes these stories so fascinating. Despite everything humanity has learned, some questions remain stubbornly unanswered. Forty episodes into this adventure, we're incredibly grateful for every member of the Belligerent Nation who's listened, laughed, questioned, commented, and shared our show. Here's to 40 episodes and many more rabbit holes ahead! Stay curious. Stay skeptical. Don't outsource your thinking. 🎧 Listen: https://bit.ly/BBNpod (https://bit.ly/BBNpod) 📲 Follow BBN: Facebook: https://facebook.com/thebbnpod (https://facebook.com/thebbnpod) Instagram: https://instagram.com/thebbnpod (https://instagram.com/thebbnpod) X: https://x.com/thebbnpod (https://x.com/thebbnpod) YouTube: https://youtube.com/@thebbnpod (https://youtube.com/@thebbnpod) 📩 thebbnpod@gmail.com (mailto:thebbnpod@gmail.com) ⚡ Dubby Energy — Code BBN for 10% OFF https://www.dubby.gg (https://www.dubby.gg) 👕 Deemed Fit Apparel — Code KYLESLOMINSKI for 15% OFF https://deemedfit.co (https://deemedfit.co) ⭐ Like, follow, subscribe, leave a review, and share BBN with your fellow mystery lovers. Your Brain Builds Your Reality | The Placebo & Nocebo Effect Part 2 | BBN Ep. 39
What if the medicine isn't the only thing affecting how well the medicine works? Episode 39 has Kyle and Nick back in the Podcast Bunker to finish the rabbit hole we couldn't possibly squeeze into last week's two-hour episode: The Placebo & Nocebo Effect Part 2. But first, we crack open the Global Trash Can Report. We start 35,000 feet in the air with a Flydubai flight where an alleged altercation between crew members somehow ends with the aircraft safely back on the ground. Then Ukraine apparently creates the wartime version of DoorDash, using drones to deliver thousands of pounds of food and medical supplies into contested areas. Science brings us an amoeba capable of thriving around 145°F, once again reminding us that life finds a way. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of people have been following a shark hanging around Busan, South Korea, apparently deciding open ocean life isn't for him anymore. North and South Korea are exchanging increasingly bizarre drone payloads, and then we close the lid with a discussion about a reported failed execution and the broader ethical and practical questions surrounding capital punishment protocols. After a Dubby Energy break, we're picking up exactly where Episode 38 ended. Can your doctor become part of the treatment? Think about two doctors. One says: Eh, try these. They might work. The other confidently explains your condition, treatment, what to expect, and what to do if anything changes. Same medication but would you experience the treatment differently? We explore how confidence, reassurance, bedside manner, expectations, packaging, and even the way medication is administered can influence our perception of treatment. Then things get really strange: Open-label placebos. Can you KNOW you're receiving a placebo, and still experience an effect? Kyle runs Nick through a thought experiment with predictably chaotic results and we eventually arrive at the idea underlying this entire two part series: Your brain constructs your experience from the information it receives. After a Deemed Fit break, we take it even further. Color. Taste. Smell. Our brains spend decades building associations between sensory cues and expected outcomes. Blue can feel calming. Red can signal energy or urgency. The appearance of medication can influence expectations before you've even swallowed it. Then there's smell. Grandma's cookies can instantly transport you back to childhood. A hospital, dentist's office, or doctor's office can trigger an emotional response before anyone even touches you. And an entire generation probably just needs one taste of artificial cherry medicine or that thick pink bubblegum-flavored prescription to become eight years old again. We explore taste, smell, caffeine, energy drinks, alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages, social cues, branding, packaging, and the expectations created by words like: Premium. Organic. Deluxe. Name Brand. How much does the label change the experience? How much does brand loyalty influence what we expect? And how much of what we experience is our brain predicting what should happen based on everything it has learned before? Placebo and nocebo aren't magic, and they're not substitutes for legitimate medical treatment. But after four hours down this rabbit hole, one thing becomes difficult to ignore: Your brain plays an enormous role in constructing the reality you experience. That's officially a wrap on our two-part Placebo/Nocebo deep dive. Stay curious. Stay skeptical. Don't outsource your thinking.
