BEE-GUARDS aims to strengthen the resilience of the European beekeeping sector and beyond by providing sustainable management practices, novel breeding strategies and by developing analytic and digital forecasting tools to enable the sector to adapt to a changing environment.
(27) Gennaro Di Prisco. What helps honey bees stay healthy?
In this episode of the BEE-GUARDS podcast, we meet Gennaro Di Prisco, a researcher at the Institute for Sustainable Plant Protection of the Italian National Research Council (CNR-IPSP), based in Portici, near Naples, Italy.
His work in WP5—Immunity & Physiology—investigates how nutrition, land use and colony management influence bee health, from the colony to the molecular level. We also explore how studying gene activity, combined with artificial intelligence, can help researchers better understand bees’ responses to stress.
Tune in for a closer look at the science behind healthier, more resilient honey bee colonies.

(26) Anna Gajda - talk with our advisery board member
Talk with Anna Gajda, being a part of our advisery board. Beekping in Poland is one of the biggest in Europe. In 2025, Poland had approximately 96,600 beekeepers and 2.4 million honey bee colonies. The average beekeeper manages around 25 colonies, and 64% keep no more than 20. Eastern Poland has the most colonies, while southern Poland has the highest colony density. Carniolan bees are the most common. Polen is one of the bigger queen producers and artificial insemination is very well developed. Local European dark bees and the Carniolan Dobra line are included in genetic conservation programmes.
Dr Anna Gajda is a veterinarian with a PhD and heads the Laboratory of Bee Diseases at Warsaw University of Life Sciences. She researches honey bee and wild pollinator health, teaches and advises beekeepers, and served on the COLOSS Executive Committee for eight years.

(25) Life Cycle Assessment and Carbon Footprint in Beekeeping
In this episode, we talk with Louise Bartek from SLU University in Uppsala, Sweden, about Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and carbon footprint analysis in European beekeeping. Louise explains how environmental impact assessments can help create more sustainable and resilient beekeeping practices for the future.
The discussion focuses on how beekeeping can reduce its environmental footprint while supporting pollinator health, biodiversity, and climate adaptation across Europe. The episode is part of the BeeGuards WP7 activities on sustainability and environmental impact.
We also encourage beekeepers, researchers, and stakeholders to participate in the European survey on Life Cycle Assessment:https://netigate.se/ra/s.aspx?s=1302771X540872467X57084
