A Fulmination on Headlines, Policy, and the Numbers Behind Them

Episode Cuts off at 11:15... NYT reactions, technocrat policy, media notes, and market data Doc Riter uses this episode as a running counterpoint to a set of New York Times articles, then pivots into a quick media roundup and a market snapshot. It is a solo commentary episode, with Doc Riter doing all the speaking and mixing opinion, policy critique, and current macro data. Key topics In this episode, Doc Riter explains that the podcast is basically his way of externalizing reactions to newspaper articles, especially when they trigger him. He pushes back on a piece arguing that land acknowledgments are morally necessary, questioning what practical action follows if the problem is real. He critiques the idea that technocrats can simply engineer solutions from above, using examples like pilot-hour rules and procurement waivers to argue that if a fix worked, it would already exist. Doc Riter says the “tech oligarch must be stopped” framing creates a false Hollywood versus technology conflict, and argues technology is more useful than the narratives people sell around it. He breaks down a “$10 gas” story by pointing to remote location, generator costs, and the expense of solar installation rather than accepting the headline at face value. He calls out what he sees as double standards in online sleuthing and identity-finding stories, especially when comparing amateur internet investigators with credentialed newspaper reporting. He dismisses a No Kings rally story as self-affirmation politics, arguing that the activism centers white liberal symbolism more than real election issues. In the media segment, he says a book about GPS was boring despite the underlying history being interesting, especially the WWII-era navigation story involving German bombers and radio beams. He mentions a Supreme Court hearing about whether video-store rental data is protected personal information, and frames it as a question of how old statutes apply in the streaming era. He closes with a market and policy snapshot covering PPI, CPI, Treasury yields, oil, commodity prices, consumer sentiment, and tariff revenue, arguing that tariffs are not producing the promised results. When Exhaustion Becomes an Excuse: The Line Between Illness and Intent

Lindsay Clancy admitted to killing her three children, and the real fight is over what that means in court, in the media, and in the public mind. Doc takes on the language, the psychiatry, and the legal gray zone around a case that forces a hard question: when does impairment explain behavior, and when does it become a shield for deliberate violence? He unpacks why the phrase “dark actions” misses the point, why sleep deprivation and a demanding job do not erase criminal responsibility, and how insanity arguments can blur the line between lack of agency and accountability. The conversation also zeroes in on how public framing can quietly shift sympathy away from victims and toward the person who committed the act. You’ll hear: Why the choice of words in reporting matters more than most people realize How psychosis, volition, and insanity pleas are being argued in this case Why “understanding right and wrong” becomes the battleground in criminal cases How media language can distort public perception of perpetrators vs. victims If you care about true crime, criminal justice, or mental health, this episode will challenge the way you think about responsibility and narrative. It’s a blunt, uncomfortable look at what happens when tragedy, psychiatry, and legal strategy collide with self-centered sleuthing as narrative.
