   Genesis 27 & 28. Reading and reflection

In this episode, we continue our journey through Genesis by reading and reflecting on chapters 27 and 28—two chapters filled with tension, deception, blessing, and a powerful encounter with God that marks the beginning of Jacob’s spiritual journey. These passages reveal the complexity of family dynamics and the unstoppable nature of God’s purposes, even when human motives and methods are flawed. In this episode we explore: Isaac’s intention to bless Esau in his old age Rebekah’s plan and Jacob’s deception to secure the blessing How each member of the family—Isaac, Rebekah, Esau, and Jacob—contributes to the conflict The weight and irreversibility of the patriarchal blessing Esau’s anguish and his plan for revenge Rebekah sending Jacob away for his safety and to find a wife Isaac blessing Jacob again before he departs, affirming God’s covenant promises Jacob’s journey toward Haran and his night alone in the wilderness Jacob’s dream of the ladder (or stairway) reaching to heaven God’s reaffirmation of the Abrahamic covenant—land, descendants, presence, and protection Jacob’s response of awe, worship, and commitment at Bethel Genesis 27 & 28 invite us to reflect on God’s sovereignty, human brokenness, and the surprising ways God meets us even when our lives feel messy and uncertain. These chapters reveal Abram’s growing faith, his integrity in the face of temptation, and the deep complexity of Sarai, Hagar, and the promise of a child. Reflections on Genesis 11-13

In this episode, we continue our journey through Genesis by reading and reflecting on chapters 11 through 13, where the biblical story transitions from humanity as a whole to the calling of a single man—Abram—through whom God will begin a new chapter of redemption. These chapters trace the movement from human pride and scattered nations to God’s personal invitation to one family, setting the stage for the entire rest of Scripture. In this episode we explore: The story of the Tower of Babel—human ambition, unity, pride, and God’s response How the scattering of languages shapes the world that follows The genealogy from Shem to Abram and why it matters God’s call to Abram: “Go from your country…” The promise of land, descendants, and blessing for all nations Abram’s journey of faith as he enters Canaan The 'altar-building' and 'God calling' moments as Abram learns to walk with God Abram and Sarai in Egypt—fear, failure, and God’s protection The tension between Abram and Lot and their peaceful separation How Lot chose the land by what he saw with his eyes rather than seeking God—and how that choice led him toward Sodom, a city that would later be destroyed. God reaffirming His promises to Abram after Lot departs Genesis 11–13 invites us to reflect on human pride, divine calling, and what it means to step into the unknown with trust. As the story narrows from nations to one family, we see God initiating a plan that will eventually shape the entire biblical narrative and the hope of the world.

   Genesis 8-10

In this episode, we continue our journey through Genesis by reading and reflecting on chapters 8 through 10—the story of the flood’s aftermath, God’s renewed commitment to creation, and the unfolding nations that emerge from Noah’s descendants. As we read, we take time to slow down, observe the rhythm of the text, and consider what these chapters reveal about God’s character, human purpose, and the rebuilding of the world after judgment. In this episode we explore: The receding of the floodwaters and Noah’s patient waiting The sending of the raven and the dove—symbols of hope and new beginnings God’s promise never to destroy the earth with a flood again The covenant with Noah and creation, sealed with the sign of the rainbow The renewed blessing: “Be fruitful and multiply” The introduction of human government and the value of human life; blood for blood consequences. Noah’s vineyard, the incident with his sons, and the resulting blessings and curses Why this genealogy matters for understanding the rest of Scripture The early shaping of cultures, regions, and peoples Genesis 8–10 invites us to reflect on beginnings after endings, on God’s mercy in the wake of judgment, and on how humanity starts again—imperfect, complex, and yet continually held within God’s unfolding story.

    Genesis 6 & 7: Reflection

In this episode, we continue our journey through the book of Genesis by reading and reflecting on chapters 6 and 7—the beginning of the story of Noah, the flood, and God’s response to a world overflowing with violence and corruption. As we read the text, we pause to consider the tension between divine judgment and divine mercy, the character of Noah, and the way these ancient chapters shape the wider biblical story. In this episode we explore: The growing wickedness and moral collapse of humanity What it means that Noah “found favor” with God The description of the Nephilim and the mysterious “sons of God” God’s grief and the heartbreaking decision to cleanse the earth Noah’s obedience in building the ark against all odds The symbolism and dimensions of the ark God’s covenant faithfulness already hinted before the flood begins The start of the flood in Genesis 7—when the rains fall, the deep opens, and the earth is transformed The theological tension of judgment, rescue, and new beginnings Together, these chapters invite us to wrestle with the weight of human brokenness, the seriousness with which God regards injustice, and the surprising ways grace still emerges even in moments of profound crisis. Through Noah, we see a picture of faithfulness that stands out in a world that has lost its way.

    Genesis 4 & 5

In this episode, we continue our journey through Genesis by reading and reflecting on chapters 4 and 5—two passages that trace humanity’s early steps outside the Garden. These chapters explore the complexity of human relationships, the rise of violence, the persistence of grace, and the unfolding story of generations. We read the Scriptures directly and pause along the way to reflect on their themes, tensions, and insights. Genesis 4 gives us the well-known but deeply human story of Cain and Abel, while Genesis 5 offers a genealogical bridge that connects Adam to Noah and highlights God’s ongoing involvement with humanity. In this episode we explore: The offerings of Cain and Abel—and what the text does and doesn’t say Jealousy, anger, and the choices that shape our lives God’s warning to Cain: “Sin is crouching at the door” The tragic first murder and God’s surprising response The rise of culture through Cain’s descendants The birth of Seth and the renewal of hope Where Cain got his wife and how the biblical text, ancient context, and early-human population growth help us understand this question Genesis 5’s genealogy as more than a list—its patterns, rhythms, and theological purpose The unique mention of Enoch and what it suggests about walking with God Genesis 4 and 5 remind us that even in the earliest human stories—full of brokenness, wandering, and generational complexity—God continues to work through imperfect people, preserving life, offering grace, and moving His story forward.

    GENESIS 2 & 3

In this episode, we continue our journey through the book of Genesis by slowing down and spending time with Genesis chapters 2 and 3. These foundational passages give us a close-up view of humanity’s creation, our original purpose, and the moment everything changed. We read through the text itself and reflect as we go—paying attention to the imagery, the emotions, the relationships, and the theological themes woven throughout these chapters. Genesis 2 offers a more intimate look at God forming humans, planting a garden, and establishing the first community. Genesis 3 then brings us into the tension of temptation, choice, and the consequences that echo throughout the biblical story. In this episode we explore: The contrast between Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 The Garden of Eden as a place of abundance, relationship, and responsibility The creation of the human family and the meaning of being “one flesh” The serpent’s strategy and the nature of temptation How shame, fear, and separation emerge after the fall God’s response—judgment, mercy, and promise What these ancient stories reveal about humanity and God today Whether you’re familiar with Genesis or reading it with fresh eyes, this episode invites you to sit with the text and let it speak—prompting questions, insights, and personal reflection on your own relationship with God, creation, and one another.
