144. Thank God I Got Left Behind (LIVE from KC)
Few doctrines have produced as much fear, anxiety, and terrible movies as the rapture. If you grew up wondering whether you'd be left behind, checking to see if your family was still around, or lying awake terrified that the end times might start at any moment, you know how deeply those teachings can get into your head. But what if the version of the end times you were taught isn't actually what's in the Bible? Live from Kansas City, we're bringing you a special panel from Homebrewed Theology's Theology Beer Camp 2026, featuring Colin along with Anna Sieges-Beal and Cynthia Shafer-Elliott of The Bible Divas and Alexis Rice of The Sacred Slope. Together, we share our own experiences with end times teachings, revisit the biblical texts that terrified us, and discover how much more manageable those passages become when we read them in their original historical contexts. And here's the kicker: the rapture that terrorized so many of us as children is a shockingly recent and very un-biblical invention. Of course, figuring that out doesn't automatically make the old fears disappear. So we talk about the psychological damage these teachings can leave behind, what it takes to untangle those fears, and how we begin to heal from a theology that taught us to dread the future. After this session, you'll be able to say with us, "Thank God I Got Left Behind!" 143. Why Purity Promises Never Last (Nehemiah 10)
This is the “rededicating your heart to God” chapter of Nehemiah. On the surface, it looks like the moment when the people finally get serious about the Law and commit themselves to doing things right. But there's a minority report hiding underneath that suggests things weren't quite as straightforward as they seem. This week, we compare Nehemiah's ancient reforms with modern evangelical family pledges, purity rings, and other attempts to make people behave by getting them to promise really hard. And if the Bible itself is any indication, these kinds of reforms don't exactly have a great track record. Saying the right words doesn't magically make you a different person. We'll also catch Nehemiah making some surprisingly subtle changes to established scripture and ask whether rewriting the tradition is ever appropriate. Along the way, we run into biblically acceptable games of chance, why almost no Christian actually follows all Ten Commandments, the days when God commanded child sacrifice, and why Larry Burkett was completely off his rocker!

142. Mr. Fosdick, I Owe You an Apology
In 1922, a Baptist pastor stood up in a Presbyterian pulpit and did the one thing preachers aren't supposed to do — he told the truth about what he actually believed. Three years later, it cost him the pulpit and helped set the stage for the Scopes Monkey Trial. A hundred years later, most of us raised fundamentalist have never once heard his name. This week, three former fundamentalist Baptists sit down with Harry Emerson Fosdick's Shall the Fundamentalists Win?, the sermon our institutions taught us to fear, and read it in his own words for the first time. Fosdick spoke about biblical criticism, evolution, the virgin birth, progressive revelation, deconstruction, religious doubt, and what happens when Christians turn theological disagreement into a test of who's allowed to belong. And then there's Clarence Macartney, the guy who preached the fundamentalist response but definitely wouldn't be welcome in fundamentalist churches today. Maybe Fosdick wasn't the villain we were taught he was. Maybe he was foreseeing something about American Christianity that we still haven't figured out a century later. And maybe the really uncomfortable question isn't “Shall the Fundamentalists Win?” but “What happens when they do?” Website: TheBibleUncut.com (https://thebibleuncut.com/) (show notes available in the blog (https://thebibleuncut.com/blog) section) Donate: TheBibleUncut.com/support-us (https://thebibleuncut.com/support-us) Discord: TheBibleUncutandUnfiltered (https://discord.gg/r2nDH8q9wy) Email: cconn@thebibleuncut.com Facebook: TheBibleUncutandUnfiltered (https://www.facebook.com/TheBibleUncutandUnfiltered/) Instagram: @TheBibleUncutandUnfiltered (https://www.instagram.com/TheBibleUncutandUnfiltered) TikTok: @BibleUncutandUnfiltered (https://www.tiktok.com/@bibleuncutandunfiltered) YouTube: @TheBibleUncutandUnfiltered (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2a9sqIk5igpeyh7CXxZR8A) Editor: Janna Connor
