Six Seconds to Decide: How Quickly Do We Judge Who Someone Is?

Research suggests we form a snap judgment of someone within the first six to seven seconds. On this episode of The Big Life Podcast, Neal Oates Jr. and Robin Lewis ask how often we respond to who a person is, and how often we respond to the story we've told ourselves about them. What we cover: Why first impressions form so fast, and the stories we tell about people before we've spoken to them A talk exercise where an audience guessed the ages and jobs of three people from photos. The final slide revealed all three were on the FBI's most wanted list. What people misunderstand about Neal (the bow tie versus the tattoos) and about Robin (calm and easygoing, yet a fierce pickleball competitor) Judging ourselves by our intentions but others by their actions Giving people room to change. Neal shares a story about a family member who made mistakes early in life. What to look for in someone who has changed: a change in behavior, and a change in your own perspective Whether it's harder to admit you were wrong about someone you disliked or someone you admired How to stay discerning without becoming cynical or judgmental Key takeaways: "Give people time for the real person to be revealed." Start with good intent, observe, listen and ask questions. Spending time around different perspectives makes us less likely to box people in. Extend grace to others, and to yourself. Reflection prompt: Think of one person you've already made up your mind about. What might you be missing, and what evidence would you be willing to reconsider? Do We Know How to Apologize?

Neal Oates, Jr. and Robin Lewis dig into what makes an apology genuine, why “I’m sorry” is often not enough, and how apology connects to responsibility, humility, and leadership. They also get personal, sharing childhood stories, family dynamics, and real examples of needing to go back and make things right. This conversation matters because apologies can repair trust, but only when they are honest, specific, and followed by real change. The episode closes with a practical challenge: identify someone who deserves a better apology and take that step. Key topics We discuss the difference between saying “I’m sorry” and actually apologizing well. Neal points out common fake-outs in apologies, including “I’m sorry, but,” blame-shifting, and apologizing for someone’s reaction instead of your own action. Robin defines a genuine apology as taking responsibility for your part, acknowledging where you messed up, and owning the impact. Both hosts agree that wording matters, but attitude matters too. A sincere apology should be humble, specific, and free of excuses. Robin shares a childhood story where his mother made him return to a store, admit what he did, and apologize after stealing candy. Neal shares a similar story about stealing Laffy Taffy as a kid and apologizing without truly being sorry, showing how early and common insincere apologies can be. The episode explores why apologies can feel like “losing,” especially when pride, ego, reputation, and the need to be right are involved. Robin explains why apologizing to his adult daughter mattered: he wanted to avoid repeating harm and help her not fear failure. The hosts discuss how repeated apologies can become meaningless if they are not paired with behavioral change. Robin shares a recent real-life example of apologizing to a former coworker at Publix for words that discouraged or hurt her, showing apology as an opportunity to restore dignity. They distinguish between forgiveness and reconciliation, noting that an apology does not guarantee either one. The episode ends with a challenge to be the bigger person, especially in families and strained relationships, and to apologize first when needed. Notable quotes “Just because we know how to say I’m sorry doesn’t mean we know how to apologize well.” “Leadership is caught more than it’s taught.” “The real test is whether we can admit what we did.” To connect with Robin: RLewis@RobinLewisGroup.com (mailto:RLewis@RobinLewisGroup.com) www.FreeLeadershipStrategyCall.com (http://www.FreeLeadershipStrategyCall.com) https://www.linkedin.com/in/lewisrobin/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/lewisrobin/) To connect with Neal: ClientCare@WorldRenownedCoaching.com (mailto:ClientCare@WorldRenownedCoaching.com) www.WorldRenownedCoaching.com (http://www.WorldRenownedCoaching.com) www.TheAffluentNegroes.com (http://www.TheAffluentNegroes.com)

Do We Really Know Our People?

This episode of the Big Life Podcast is a reflective conversation between Neal Oates, Jr. and Robin Lewis about how familiarity can create the illusion of knowing someone. They explore why closeness does not automatically equal depth, and why curiosity has to stay active in long-term relationships, especially with spouses, family, friends, and coworkers. Neal and Robin also use their own friendship as an example of intentional relationship-building, sharing how regular meetings, honest questions, and safe spaces have helped them know each other more fully over time. Key topics Neal opens with gratitude for listener encouragement and uses the moment to mark a major milestone: episode 101. They discuss the central question, “Do we really know our people?” and how time together does not automatically mean deep knowledge. Robin shares how even weekly faith group meetings can reveal new things about people he has known for years. Neal talks about how easy it is to reduce loved ones to roles like mom, dad, spouse, or child, instead of seeing their full identity and history. Robin admits that in his 39-year marriage, he still has to be intentional about tuning in, especially when a conversation is not naturally interesting to him. Neal reflects on how familiarity can make him lazy in relationships, especially with his wife, and how he can become more curious with strangers than with the people closest to him. They talk about the impact of busyness on attention, care, and emotional availability, especially after work. Neal shares a real example from teaching a real estate class, where asking “How are you really doing?” three times helped uncover someone’s real struggle. Robin explains that getting to know people requires margin, presence, and focus on what matters most. They revisit the difference between early relationship questions and later relationship questions, noting how conversations often shift from dreams and beliefs to schedules and responsibilities. Neal emphasizes that people evolve, and relationships have to keep pace with changing dreams, fears, and priorities. Robin adds that safe spaces matter, and that not everyone shares deeply, but everyone should have at least one or two trusted people. Ask someone close to you a deeper question this week, such as what excites them or what has changed in their life. Revisit the questions you used to ask early in a relationship and bring one of them back. Slow down enough to notice whether someone’s words and energy match. Create margin in your calendar for the people who matter most. Offer at least one trusted person a safe space to be fully honest. Closing reminder: keep caring, keep listening, keep showing up Notable quotes “Time together does not automatically equal deep knowledge.” “I want to know the other side of you.” “If we start asking those questions, people are going to open up.” Action Items: Ask someone close to you a deeper question this week, such as what excites them or what has changed in their life.
