About The Black Male Educator Classroom Podcast

The Black Male Educator Classroom Podcast goes beyond the usual conversations about recruiting and retaining Black men in education. It is a space for honest conversations about what Black men need just to be, grow, lead, build, own, and flourish—personally, professionally, entrepreneurially, and collectively. Hosted by Dr. Sekou Haki Kamau Afrika, Founder and Chief Educational Executive of The Black Male Educator Classroom, the podcast brings together lived experiences, research, theory, and practice to explore the realities, possibilities, and needs of Black men across the educational ecosystem. Through solo episodes and conversations with Black men in education, as well as educators, researchers, leaders, institution builders, and others committed to this work, the podcast moves beyond conversations focused solely on representation, recruitment, and retention. We engage the whole Black man—our health and well-being, purpose, knowledge of self, self-governance, financial agency and ownership, entrepreneurship, leadership, relationships, professional growth, and the ways we contribute to ourselves, our families, our communities, and future generations. At its heart, this podcast is about brotherhood and community. It is about learning from one another, sharing knowledge and lived experience, strengthening one another, building together, creating opportunities, and developing the personal and collective capacity for Black men in education to flourish. The Black Male Educator Classroom Podcast is a space for connection, learning, growth, brotherhood, leadership, entrepreneurship, and collective advancement. Bro, what do you do when things don’t go as planned?

In this episode of The Black Male Educator Classroom Podcast, Sekou Haki Kamau Afrika reflects on a reality every brother eventually faces: what do you do when things do not go as planned? Life, work, family, health, business, and purpose do not always unfold the way we expect. Sekou shares how a car accident, medical appointments, transportation challenges, changes in his teaching schedule, delays in launching the TBMEC Brotherhood, and unexpected business needs forced him to reconsider plans he had worked hard to put in place. Rather than pushing through at all costs, Sekou reflects on what he has learned about adjusting the plan without abandoning the purpose. Sometimes the next step is not doing more. It may be slowing down, postponing something, asking for help, learning something new, releasing a deadline, or giving your health the attention it needs. Sekou also explores the spiritual side of uncertainty. Drawing on Imani—faith—he reflects on trusting the Creator even when the path forward is unclear. A setback may be redirection. The plan can be a starting point without becoming something you have to force. This episode challenges brothers to take inventory when life changes. What actually needs your attention? What can wait? What patterns are showing up again? Who can help you see your blind spots? What do you need to learn? Sekou reminds brothers that disappointment, frustration, uncertainty, and overwhelm are real. You do not have to make a difficult experience sound positive. But you can process it, stay grounded, use your routines and spiritual practices, seek support, make the necessary adjustments, and keep moving forward. The message is simple: sometimes sticking to the original plan is not the answer. Stay grounded. Protect your health. Seek guidance. Adjust when needed. Keep moving. Are We Retaining Black Men in Education or Just Keeping Them Employed? What About the Man?

In this episode of The Black Male Educator Classroom Podcast, Sekou Haki Kamau Afrika challenges the way the field talks about retaining Black men in education. Retention cannot simply mean keeping a Black man employed or celebrating that a school or district has a Black male educator on staff. The deeper question is: What about the man? Sekou argues that Black men in education are not a monolith. What a new teacher needs may differ greatly from what a mid-career educator, veteran teacher, counselor, administrator, husband, father, or brother approaching retirement needs. Salary matters. School conditions matter. Leadership matters. Brotherhood matters. But none alone tells the whole story. This episode expands the retention conversation beyond representation and asks whether educational institutions truly value Black men’s knowledge, expertise, aspirations, and humanity. Sekou challenges schools and systems to stop reducing Black men to disciplinarians and to recognize their strengths in curriculum, instruction, counseling, leadership, professional learning, and entrepreneurship. Sekou also turns the question back to brothers. Are you taking care of your health? Are your finances in order? Are you developing your gifts? Are you learning, growing, building meaningful relationships, and pursuing opportunities aligned with who you want to become? The question is whether you are thriving and living a meaningful life while doing the work. The message is clear: Black men are more than the positions they occupy. Retention must include the whole man—his purpose, health, finances, family, professional growth, talents, aspirations, relationships, and life beyond the school building. Sekou challenges brothers to take their health and finances seriously, cultivate their talents, value their expertise, seek proper compensation, keep learning, keep connecting, and decide what matters most for the life they are building. Bruh, Are You Feeling the October Blues? Don’t Let the Slump take You Out

In this episode of The Black Male Educator Classroom Podcast, Sekou Haki Kamau Afrika follows the four-part Black Men in Education Back-to-School Checkup Series with an October check-in: Bruh, are you feeling the October blues? Don’t let the slump take you out. By October, the excitement and energy of the new school year can begin to wear off. Grades are due. Formal observations are starting. Student needs and behaviors are intensifying. Deadlines are piling up. And all of that is happening while Black men in education are still managing family, finances, relationships, health, and life outside of work. Sekou shares how this season has affected him personally while balancing teaching, family, multiple business responsibilities, and recovery from a car accident. One of the most important questions he was challenged to ask was: What can I postpone, remove, or adjust right now to give myself some breathing room? This episode encourages brothers to return to the tools from the Back-to-School Checkup. Check in with yourself emotionally, mentally, physically, relationally, and professionally. Pay attention to what your body is telling you. Use the routines that ground you. Rest when you need rest. Ask for help. Give yourself grace. And adjust the plan when life requires it. Sekou also reminds us that healthy routines and wellness practices do not make us immune to grief, conflict, illness, setbacks, or institutional challenges. The tools help us recognize what is happening, respond intentionally, seek support, and adapt without allowing every challenge to derail us. The challenge is simple: look honestly at what is on your plate. Keep what is working. Adjust what is not. Put something down if you need to. Reconnect with the people who pour into you. And start with one manageable practice that can help you move forward. The goal is wholeness, not just survival. Bruh, Are You Becoming the Man You Want to Be?

In this episode of The Black Male Educator Classroom Podcast, Sekou Haki Kamau Afrika concludes the four-part Black Men in Education Back-to-School Checkup Series. Part 1 asked: How are you really doing, bruh? Part 2 asked whether your life was set up to sustain you through December. Part 3 focused on filling your cup. In this final checkup, Sekou asks a deeper question: Are you becoming the man you want to be? Sekou challenges brothers to think beyond tasks, titles, and professional goals and consider the man being shaped in the process. What kind of brother, husband, father, professional, community man, and Black man in education are you trying to become this year? Are your daily choices aligned with your purpose, values, family, lineage, and the legacy you want to leave? Drawing from his own life, Sekou reflects on his grandfather’s example of service, responsibility, and building up Black men in family and community. He shares how learning more about his family lineage has deepened his understanding of purpose and strengthened his commitment to Black boys and Black men in education. The episode also brings together the lessons from the entire Back-to-School Checkup Series: taking care of your health and well-being, getting organized, managing your time and money, filling your cup, staying connected to purpose, and refusing to neglect yourself while serving others. Sekou emphasizes that becoming your best self requires regular check-ins, honest reflection, and the willingness to make adjustments throughout the year. At the center of this episode is a call to authenticity and brotherhood. How Are You Filling Your Cup, Bruh? Don’t Settle for Scraps

In this episode of The Black Male Educator Classroom Podcast, Sekou Haki Kamau Afrika launches Part 3 of the four-part Black Men in Education Back-to-School Checkup Series. In Part 1, the question was: How are you really doing, bruh? In Part 2: Are you set up to make it to December? In Part 3, Sekou asks another essential question: How are you getting your cup filled? Sekou reflects on a lesson that became clear through his burnout experience: Black men in education can spend so much time giving to students, colleagues, families, institutions, and communities that we leave ourselves the scraps. He challenges brothers to think intentionally about who pours into them, how they pour into themselves, and whether they have learned how to receive—not only give. For Sekou, filling your cup is a form of self-love. It means intentionally investing time, energy, care, support, wisdom, rest, and joy into yourself. He shares how elders, colleagues, brothers, Black women, family, and community have poured into him. Sekou also examines why filling your cup cannot be something you wait to do during winter or spring break. Restoration has to happen along the way—daily, weekly, and monthly—so you are not constantly operating from depletion. The goal is to build practices and relationships that help sustain the man behind the role. This episode also connects filling your cup to brotherhood. Black men in education should not have to operate in silos. We need relationships where brothers can process life together, seek wisdom, encourage one another, give and receive support, and help each other remain connected to purpose without sacrificing our well-being. The challenge for this episode is simple: what do you need to put in place so you are regularly restoring yourself throughout the school year. Bruh, Are You Set Up to Make It to December?

In this episode of The Black Male Educator Classroom Podcast, Sekou Haki Kamau Afrika launches Part 2 of the four-part Black Men in Education Back-to-School Checkup Series. In Part 1, the question was: How are you really doing, bruh? In Part 2, Sekou takes the next step: is your life actually set up to sustain you through the school year—at least until December? Sekou focuses on organization as a form of sustainability. Work, family, finances, health, relationships, professional development, side work, and the unexpected all compete for attention. Without structure, those demands can create unnecessary stress and decision fatigue. Sekou challenges brothers to get their house in order—personally, professionally, financially, and relationally—so the school year does not begin running them. He shares how calendars, routines, rest, exercise, financial systems, automation, and intentional planning can create more freedom, confidence, and room for what matters. Sekou also shares his own systems for managing work, The Black Male Educator Classroom, family, health, finances, and rest. His challenge is practical: spend an hour identifying the area of your life that needs the most organization and start there. You do not have to fix everything at once. The goal is not a perfect schedule or a challenge-free school year. It is to build enough structure to reduce stress, make room for rest and joy, and sustain yourself through the next major checkpoint in December. How Are You Really Doing, Bruh?

Before you pour into students, colleagues, schools, families, and communities, there is an important question to answer: How are you really doing, bruh? In this episode of The Black Male Educator Classroom Podcast, Sekou Haki Kamau Afrika launches Part 1 of a four-part Black Men in Education Back-to-School Checkup Series to help brothers assess how they are entering the academic year. Using the familiar idea of the back-to-school physical, Sekou puts on his “doctor hat” and invites brothers to examine the whole man. Your emotional state, physical health, mental clarity, spiritual grounding, relationships, finances, professional life, schedule, and what is happening at home all shape how you show up. Sekou also shares his own check-in while launching The Black Male Educator Classroom and its podcast and navigating life as a professor, entrepreneur, husband, and father. He discusses how his morning routine, spiritual grounding, walking, nourishment, hydration, and pauses throughout the day help him stay aware of what he needs. This episode is not about pretending everything is fine. It is about becoming aware enough to recognize what needs attention and intentional enough to respond. Before we focus on how everyone else is doing, brothers, we have to ask: How am I entering this year? This is Part 1 of the four-part Black Men in Education Back-to-School Checkup Series. I Can’t Sacrifice Myself for This Black Male Educator Pipeline Work: Burnout, Healing & Purpose

What happens when work rooted in purpose begins costing you your health, your family, and yourself? In Episode 4 of The Black Male Educator Classroom Podcast, Sekou Haki Kamau Afrika shares the most personal chapter of the story so far: his burnout while leading Black male educator pipeline work, running a research center, managing grants and contracts, supporting staff, serving as a professor, raising a family, and trying to carry it all. Sekou reflects on chronic stress across three areas of his life—work, family, and his own well-being—and the warning signs that forced him to pay attention. He discusses the pressure to make sure the work did not “fall apart on my watch,” the demands of leadership, and what he learned when excellence and purpose came at a personal cost. The episode follows his decision to resign from center leadership and step away from grants, as well as the longer-than-expected healing process. Sekou’s message is not that purpose is the problem. It is that purpose cannot require the destruction of the person carrying it. The work matters—but so do the man, his health, his family, and his ability to remain whole. “I can’t sacrifice myself for this Black Male Educator Pipeline work.” This episode brings the opening four-part story back to the man behind the mission and a core lesson shaping The Black Male Educator Classroom: Black men need support not only to do the work, but to grow, lead, heal, build, and flourish while doing it. Why Purpose, Good Intentions, and Funding Aren’t Enough to Sustain a Black Male Educator Pipeline

Purpose can inspire the work. Good intentions can get people to the table. Funding can create opportunities. Together, they can be enough to build a Black male educator pipeline—but none of them, alone or together, are enough to sustain it. In Episode 3 of The Black Male Educator Classroom Podcast, Sekou Haki Kamau Afrika moves from explaining what Black men in education need to sharing what the work taught him about actually building and sustaining it. Drawing on six years of building and sustaining programs, partnerships, mentoring networks, and learning communities at Bowie State University, Sekou reflects on lessons that could only be learned by doing the work. What does it take to turn research and vision into something real? What happens when grant funding is temporary? How do partnerships, teams, systems, community, and organizational structure determine whether promising work grows, stalls, or lasts? Sekou draws lessons from the Black Male Educator Pipeline work he led—spanning eighth grade through the master’s level and into an alumni network—as well as from other initiatives connecting Black males across stages of education. This is not a rejection of purpose, good intentions, or funding—all three matter. Meaningful work for Black men in education requires more: relationships, community, strategy, infrastructure, collaboration, leadership, and a sustainability plan. From Pipeline to Ecosystem: Why Black Men in Education Need Community, Not Isolation

Black men in education are not being lost at one point in the pipeline—they are being lost at every stage. In Episode 2 of The Black Male Educator Classroom Podcast, Sekou Haki Kamau Afrika examines why recruitment and retention alone are not enough and what becomes possible when we move from a pipeline to an ecosystem. Sekou traces nearly two decades of research, mentoring, program development, partnerships, and institution-building focused on Black boys and Black men in education that grew into a larger question: What does it take for Black men not only to enter education, but to grow, lead, mentor, remain connected, and flourish? Drawing on his work at Bowie State University, Sekou explores efforts to support Black males from high school through undergraduate, graduate, professional, and alumni stages—and why isolated programs are not enough when the challenges are interconnected. Sekou also reflects on collaborations with colleagues who helped expand this work. At the center of the episode is a simple but consequential proposition: Black men in education need community, not isolation. The work must be bigger than getting Black men into classrooms. It must create environments where Black men can build relationships, receive mentorship, exercise leadership, support one another, and stay connected. The answer is bigger than the pipeline. We have to build the ecosystem. From Burnout Back to Purpose: Building The Black Male Educator Classroom

In this inaugural episode of The Black Male Educator Classroom Podcast, Sekou Haki Kamau Afrika introduces the platform's vision and shares the personal journey that led to its creation. He reflects on years of work building spaces for Black boys and Black men in education, the impact of burnout, and the healing that opened the door to a renewed sense of purpose. This episode traces the evolution from research and institution-building at Bowie State University to a broader, more expansive mission: creating a liberatory ecosystem where Black men in education can grow, lead, heal, build, and flourish—personally and professionally. Sekou also speaks to the importance of collective responsibility, sustainable movement-building, and intergenerational support in advancing liberation for Black boys and men. Grounded in purpose and rooted in Black history, this conversation sets the foundation for a podcast that centers Black men across the educational ecosystem, elevates their experiences and expertise, and builds brotherhood and community around education, leadership, health and well-being, healing, and liberation. It is both a personal testimony and a call to action for brothers committed to moving the work forward together. Welcome to The Black Male Educator Classroom. Join the movement.
