Boarding Reports Should Never Surprise Parents

Report Writing in Boarding: How to Track Progress, Keep It Personal, and Support Staff Report writing does not have to be a generic copy and paste nightmare. If you work in boarding, teaching, or pastoral care, this episode shows how to write reports that are personal, useful, and impossible for parents to dismiss. Meg and Tom break down the exact approach to report writing at the end of half term, from gathering observations all term long to turning them into clear, evidence-based feedback. They explain why the best reports are built on both qualitative notes and quantitative data, and why the real goal is not just to describe a student, but to show progress, raise the right targets, and reflect honestly without sounding harsh. You’ll discover: How to collect useful notes throughout the term without drowning in admin Why a simple spreadsheet, reflection sheet, or app can save hours later How to avoid dangerous copy and paste mistakes, wrong names, and wrong pronouns The “sandwich” structure that helps deliver criticism kindly. Why reports should never surprise parents, and how to stay ahead of tricky conversations How to spot the students in the middle who are easiest to overlook Why great reports highlight personality, not just behaviour or attendance How staff appraisals, PDMs, and SMART targets mirror the same reflection process They also talk through pastoral tracking tools like UHQ, the value of student self-reflection, and how better reporting can improve communication between house staff, teachers, parents, and senior leaders. This is essential listening if you’re writing boarding reports, managing student progress, or trying to make your feedback more human, more accurate, and more helpful. Start early, keep notes, and make sure your report says something real. Rewards, Sanctions & Behaviour Support

Rewards that actually change behaviour are never one-size-fits-all. Meg and Tom break down what works, what backfires, and why the smartest behaviour systems are the ones built around the child, not the scoreboard. If you’ve ever questioned negative points, ladder charts, or reward systems that seem to undo a day’s worth of good choices in one moment, this conversation will hit home. Meg and Tom share real classroom and boarding experiences that show how small, thoughtful incentives can support better habits without crushing confidence. Meg shares practical examples from boarding and teaching, including dorm tidiness scores, personalized rewards like extra time in bed or a Friday hot chocolate, and the impact of celebrating small wins in ways children genuinely care about. Tom pushes the conversation into the bigger question: what happens when systems meant to motivate end up making children feel like nothing they do counts? They also tackle the tension between individual recognition and whole-group fairness, plus the importance of keeping reward systems proportionate, age-appropriate, and context-driven. This episode is a useful reminder that behaviour support is not about rigid rules or flashy systems, it’s about helping children feel seen, successful, and motivated to keep going. Perfect for teachers, boarding staff, and anyone who wants a more human approach to behaviour support that builds confidence instead of eroding it. Behaviour in boarding and school: context, de-escalation, and why blanket rules fail

VAT on private school fees is not just a tax on the wealthy - it is pushing real children, real families, and already stretched mainstream schools to the edge. Tom and Meg unpack why the headlines miss the bigger picture, and why the fallout is hitting military families, SEND placements, scholarship students, and parents who were simply making it work. They break down what is actually happening as independent school’s close or cut back, why the predicted numbers were so far off, and what it means when thousands of students suddenly move into mainstream classrooms that are already overflowing. From classrooms without walls to schools struggling to afford books, this conversation makes the consequences feel immediate, personal, and impossible to ignore. Then the episode shifts into the heart of the topic - behaviour. Tom and Meg explore how behaviour in boarding and school settings is often communication, not defiance, and why understanding the root cause matters more than reacting fast. You will discover how context changes everything, how to spot anxiety hiding behind anger or refusal, and why siblings, twins, age, identity, and hormones can all shape the way a child acts out. They also share practical strategies that actually help in the moment: de-escalation, co-regulation, body language, candle breathing, four-square breathing, grounding techniques, and the power of calm voice control. Meg explains the importance of being firm but fair, using consequences instead of punishment, and building behaviour plans that teach children how to regulate rather than simply handing out sanctions. If you are a parent, teacher, boarding professional, or anyone working with young people, this episode is packed with hard-earned insight, real examples, and a refreshingly honest take on what helps - and what does not. Essential listening if you care about education, behaviour, and the pressure points no one is talking about properly. Staff Wellbeing - How you can look after yourself, and when not to look at emails.

Staff Wellbeing in Boarding Schools Staff wellbeing in boarding helps keep the whole house running when everyone is tired, stretched, and back on duty before they’ve had time to recover. Tom and Meg discuss why the first half term can feel especially demanding, what makes boarding work different from a standard 9 to 5, and how setting boundaries can help staff stay effective without being permanently available. They unpack the reality of split shifts, weekend rotations, on-site responsibilities, and the interruptions that come with boarding life. From waking students and handling breakfast duty to prep supervision and late-night support, this conversation explores why staff need care and support too, not just the students they look after. In this episode, they discuss: Why “just quickly checking emails” can become a habit that eats into time off How setting boundaries early can help manage expectations around availability Why getting off site can support a mental reset How teaching staff’s understanding of boarding life can strengthen school culture How rotas, staffing levels, and leadership decisions affect staff wellbeing Tom and Meg also reflect on the mental load of boarding work, the challenge of getting proper breaks, and the expectation that staff will always be on. They consider how schools can build a healthier, more sustainable approach to boarding for staff, students, and the wider school community. Key topics Why the first half term can be so draining, with constant new names, people, and routines to absorb. How boarding staff often work split shifts, with early mornings, daytime gaps, and evening duties that can run late. Why it’s easy to blur personal and professional time, especially when staff feel pressure to answer emails or stay available on days off. The challenge of setting boundaries early, rather than trying to establish them after constant availability becomes the norm. How boarding roles vary, with some staff teaching as well as boarding and others supporting housekeeping, TA work, medical desk duty, or day duty. The broad responsibilities of heads of boarding, from being on call to taking part in open days, safeguarding meetings, SLT meetings, and marketing. How rota patterns differ between schools, including weekend arrangements and different models for cover. Why boarding hours don’t always follow a standard 9-to-5 pattern. How schools are becoming more supportive of proper time off for boarding staff. Why teaching staff involvement in boarding can build empathy and a better understanding of what boarders and boarding staff manage each day. In this episode, Tom and Meg share practical ways to spot homesickness early, respond calmly, and match support to the student’s age and needs.
