You Don't Need More Clients To Make More Money
What if the relentless push for "more clients" is the very thing holding your business back? In this episode, Claire sits down with business coach and author Robin Waite (Fearless Pricing) for an honest, refreshingly commercial chat about pricing, productising and founder sanity. Robin went from running a boutique design and marketing agency in the Cotswolds to selling it, falling into coaching completely by accident, and building a business model based on working with fewer, higher-paying clients. Along the way, he shares the hard-won lessons from hitting burnout on a bicycle at 52mph, the psychology behind why a 10% price rise is actually a discount, and why an 80% conversion rate is a flashing red light that you're charging far too little. Whether you're trapped in an hourly-rate model or feeling exhausted by the constant feast-or-famine cycle, this conversation will give you the clarity and permission to rethink your pricing completely. What We Cover in This Episode: The accidental coach: How Robin stepped away from agency life and why he chose to work with 6 to 8 clients instead of dozens. The Sales Cycle of Doom: Why founders get trapped between delivery and selling, and how productised packaging breaks the loop. Charging for speed, not time: Why clients aren't paying for hours - they're paying to get to the outcome faster. The 80% close rate trap: Why closing almost every prospect means your prices are way too low, and what a healthy close rate actually looks like. Pricing psychology: Why a small price increase often feels like a discount to the right buyers. Should you put prices on your website? Robin and Claire debate transparency, positioning, and qualification. The Cocktail Shaker: The one trait Robin puts into the shaker for founder success, and why "neediness" gets frozen straight on ice. The Psychology Behind Marketing That Actually Converts
AI Can Write Your Copy. But It Can't Understand Your Customer What happens when we stop thinking of copywriting as simply “words on a page” and start seeing it as a strategic tool for understanding people, shaping behaviour and driving growth? In this episode, I’m joined by copywriter, strategist and marketing expert Arfa Iqbal, someone I’ve known professionally for many years and whose thinking I’ve learned so much from. Arfa helps coaches, consultants and experts scale to their first or next seven figures through sales funnels, strategy, messaging and a deep understanding of their ideal clients. We get into what really makes marketing work, why so many campaigns fail despite having great individual assets, and what happens when businesses start outsourcing their thinking to AI. In this episode, we explore: Why copywriting is about far more than putting words on a page The difference between strategy and tactics and why businesses need both Why every part of your marketing funnel needs to work as a coherent whole The costly mistake Arfa made early in her career by targeting the wrong audience Why understanding buyer psychology is at the heart of effective marketing Whether AI is actually killing the copywriting profession How to use AI to make your marketing faster without outsourcing your thinking Why generic AI-generated content is becoming increasingly easy to spot How to identify the different avatars within your ideal client base Why your sales calls, social media comments, YouTube comments and book reviews can be a goldmine of customer research Arfa's “100” exercise for uncovering your ideal client's deepest pain points, fears, desires and motivations The difference between talking about a feature, explaining a benefit and communicating the emotional benefit Why people buy emotionally and justify their decisions logically How going deeper into customer psychology transformed the performance of two very different campaigns Why your imagery needs to work as hard as your copy How tiny visual details can influence whether your marketing resonates Why consistency and familiarity matter in building a recognisable brand The danger of creating content simply for the sake of creating content Why intentionality is such an important principle in marketing and business Why sometimes the smartest thing you can do is launch at 80% and learn from the response One of my biggest takeaways from this conversation is that effective marketing isn't about producing more. It's about understanding more. When you truly understand the person you're trying to reach, your messaging, offers, campaigns, imagery and customer journey all become much clearer. And perhaps most importantly, AI can help us execute faster, but it cannot replace the human understanding that makes marketing meaningful. A few ideas to take away Go deeper than demographics. Your ideal client isn't just their age, job title or income. What are they worried about at 2am? What do they secretly want? What frustrates them? What are they trying to prove, avoid or become? Stop looking at marketing assets in isolation. Your advert, email, landing page, sales page and follow-up should feel like parts of the same journey rather than a collection of disconnected tactics. Use AI as a tool, not a substitute for thinking. AI can help with research, ideas and first drafts. But the strategy, judgement, nuance and human understanding still need to come from you. And stop overthinking. Arfa's advice for what to put “on ice” is simple: if it's 80% good enough, get it out there. You can always create version two. About Arfa Arfa Iqbal helps coaches, consultants and experts scale to their first or next seven figures through sales funnels, strategy and messaging. She is also the author of Mind Hack Marketing, which explores buyer psychology and how businesses can better understand and connect with their ideal clients. You can find Arfa on LinkedIn and Facebook, or visit her website at arfasilviaiqbal.com. You're One Choice Away From Changing Everything
What happens when the experiences that could have broken you become part of the story that shapes you? In this episode of The Brand Mixology Podcast, our founder, Claire, sits down with storyteller and author Jody McHugh, all the way from Atlanta, Georgia, for a deeply personal conversation about childhood, trauma, addiction, crime, survival, kindness and finding a way forward. Jody's story is anything but conventional. At eight years old, his perfect family life ended in a single morning. What followed was hunger, crime and a court battle to stay out of prison at 15. But alongside the hard moments came a group of hippies, a determined lawyer and an actress who helped him write his book - people who showed him what kindness and positive influence can do. This one is a powerful reminder that we never really know which moments, people or experiences will change the course of our lives. Sometimes, the hardest chapters can become the ones that shape what comes next. What you'll hear in this episode The morning at eight years old that turned Jody's perfect family life upside down Judy Hansen and the "hippies" who gave two hungry boys hope - and a reason to believe in a future Writing to Legal Aid himself at 15 to fight the judge's last-minute change to his sentence Quitting drug dealing and learning to fly planes Writing The Damage Done with actress Polly Craig, and the podcast he now hosts with his daughter, Katie Words to take away Put in the cocktail shaker: Positive influence - find the people who will lead you in a good direction Put on ice: Drugs - Jody saw what they did to his brothers and everyone around them Connect with Jody Website: https://www.jodymchugh.com/ (https://www.jodymchugh.com/) The Damage Done (Amazon): https://www.amazon.co.uk/Damage-Done-Jody-McHugh-ebook/dp/B00B6T246W (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Damage-Done-Jody-McHugh-ebook/dp/B00B6T246W) Connect with Brand Mixology Website: https://brandmixology.co (https://brandmixology.co/) Work out what you should be known for: Brand Therapy - https://brandmixology.co/brand-therapy (https://brandmixology.co/brand-therapy) Take the quiz: Too Close to See It - https://brandmixology.co/quiz (https://brandmixology.co/quiz) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brand.mixology/ (https://www.instagram.com/brand.mixology/) Guest bio Jody McHugh is a storyteller and author from Atlanta, Georgia. Travel, Transformation and Finding Your Way Back to Yourself
What if getting away isn’t really about escaping your everyday life, but about seeing it differently when you come back? In this episode of The Brand Mixology Podcast, I’m joined by luxury travel entrepreneur Nadine Brady for a conversation about travel, transformation, business and the unexpected ways our life experiences shape the entrepreneurs we become. Nadine’s story is anything but conventional. She grew up travelling around Scotland with her fairground family, later lived and worked in Australia, built a luxury travel business working with professional footballers and high-net-worth clients, and eventually found herself having to completely rethink the life and business she had built. What I love about Nadine’s story is that travel has been a constant thread throughout it all. But for her, travel is about so much more than beautiful hotels, amazing destinations and getting away from everyday life. It’s about perspective. It’s about stepping outside your usual environment, meeting different people, challenging the way you see the world and coming home with a new sense of what’s possible. And I think there’s a lot in that for business owners. Because sometimes we get so close to our businesses that we can’t see what needs to change. We keep pushing, doing more and looking at what everyone else is doing, when what we actually need is space to step back, think differently and reconnect with what we want. We talk about: • How Nadine’s unconventional childhood shaped the entrepreneur she became • Why stepping outside your usual environment can change your perspective • What happens when the business you built no longer fits the life you want • Going from being behind the scenes to becoming the lead in your own life • The connection between travel, confidence and personal transformation • Why community and human connection matter more than ever • How Nadine is creating a new kind of luxury travel experience through The Life Edit • The power of looking backwards to understand the breadcrumbs that brought you here • And why we are often capable of far more than we think we are If you’re a founder who feels like you’re ready for a different perspective, a different direction or simply a bit more space to think, there’s plenty in this conversation to take away. Because sometimes you don’t need to work harder. You just need to see things differently. This is The Brand Mixology Podcast, where we challenge the default path, mix things up and create a brand, business and life we actually want. Don't Dress To Impress - DressTo Take Control
What if the most powerful branding tool you own is already hanging in your wardrobe? In this episode, Claire sits down with Clare Chambers — personal brand stylist, former celebrity stylist (yes, she dressed Renée Zellweger for Bridget Jones), and the woman who's on a mission to help female entrepreneurs stop treating their clothes as an afterthought. This conversation is part style masterclass, part mindset shift, and completely packed with the kind of practical wisdom you can actually use. The 4 Words That Will Transform Your Sales
Stop overcomplicating your sales calls. If you’ve ever felt that "sales" is a dirty word or struggled to explain exactly what you do to a potential client, this episode is for you. Claire sits down with James Newell, the expert behind "Clear Sales Message", to decode why most businesses fail at the first hurdle of sales communication. James shares his journey from managing £600 million in corporate accounts to teaching entrepreneurs how to sell with honesty and integrity. We dive deep into the buying psychology that drives decisions, exploring why your potential customers might not be connecting the dots between your features and their needs. James explains the "False Consensus Effect" and how it sabotages your sales messaging strategy by assuming everyone sees the world from your perspective. You’ll learn how to bridge the gap between what you offer and why your customer should actually care, using simple, actionable frameworks that remove the "sleaze" from the process. Whether you're a seasoned business owner or just starting out, this conversation will help you build a clear sales message that resonates. We discuss the importance of "trigger points" in the sales process simplification and how to stay at the forefront of your audience's mind without being offensive or pushy. Why Your Marketing Isn’t Working (And How to Fix It)
Ever feel like you’re doing all the marketing things but nothing seems to land? More posts. More emails. More effort. Still no momentum. If you’ve ever found yourself thinking “marketing just doesn’t work for my business”, this episode is for you. In this conversation, Claire is joined by Ben Miller, a B2B marketing expert and Fractional Lead with over 20 years’ experience across agency, in-house and consultancy roles. Ben unpacks the viral LinkedIn post that struck a nerve with founders and marketers alike and explains why marketing usually isn’t broken… but how it’s being approached often is. Together, they explore what a truly customer‑centric marketing strategy looks like, why treating every interaction like a sales pitch quietly kills trust, and how unrealistic expectations sabotage long‑term marketing ROI. Ben also shares why marketing patience is essential (especially in B2B), how to build stronger agency relationships, and when it might be time to bring in a Fractional CMO. If you want a calmer, smarter, more sustainable approach to growth — one that supports both your business and your life — hit play. Visibility That Converts: PR, Credibility, and Growth in the Age of AI
Visibility That Converts: PR, Credibility, and Growth in the Age of AI with Victoria Usher, Founder of GingerMay PR is often seen as something you do once you’ve “made it”. But what if visibility isn’t the reward… what if it’s part of the growth engine itself? In this episode of Brand Mixology, Claire sits down with Victoria Usher, founder of the multi award-winning PR agency GingerMay, to explore what PR really is today, when it works, when it doesn’t, and how founders can think about visibility in a way that actually supports sustainable growth. With 16 years of experience building and scaling her own agency, Victoria brings a rare dual perspective. She understands PR not just as a communications discipline, but as a strategic lever that only works when the foundations of a business are right. This is a grounded, honest conversation about timing, focus, leadership, and why PR can amplify a business, but never fix one. In this episode, we cover: What PR actually is today and how it has evolved beyond press releases Why timing matters more than tactics when it comes to PR The biggest signals that a business is not ready for PR yet How PR should sit within a wider growth strategy, not alongside it When visibility supports sales and when it becomes a distraction How founders can prepare for PR before hiring an agency Whether PR is something you can do yourself in the early stages The growing role of PR in GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) and AI search Why credibility, trust, and quality sources matter more than ever What sustainable growth really looks like after scaling too fast Victoria’s success “ingredient” and what founders should put on ice A standout insight PR doesn’t create credibility. It amplifies it. When the messaging, audience clarity, product, and sales foundations are in place, PR can accelerate growth dramatically. When they’re not, it simply magnifies the cracks. That’s why saying “not yet” is sometimes the most responsible advice an agency can give.
