Can Trump's DOJ Block Alaska's Senate Result The Two Dan Sullivans Lawsuit Explained

Trump's Justice Department has sued Alaska before the votes are counted, asking a judge to block the state from certifying its U.S. Senate race if Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan loses to Democrat Mary Peltola. The reason is that a second candidate on the ballot is also named Dan Sullivan. On this episode of The Breakdown, I break down the lawsuit, filed Oct. 22 under the National Voter Registration Act. The DOJ argues that the second Dan Sullivan, a retired teacher who registered as a Republican when he filed to run, is on the ballot to pull votes from the incumbent. Alaska's trial court and state supreme court have already ruled he can stay on the ballot, and Trump says he directed the DOJ to file the suit. Peltola and Senate Democrats have asked a federal judge to dismiss it, calling the idea that every vote for the other Sullivan was meant for the senator insulting to voters. I also look back at Florida's Senate District 37 in 2020, where Republican Ileana Garcia won by just 32 votes while a no-party candidate with the same last name as the Democratic incumbent drew more than 6,000. That "ghost candidate" was recruited and paid by a former Republican state senator, who was later convicted on campaign finance charges. We look at how the two cases compare and where they don't. Election Day is Nov. 3, and early voting in Alaska has already begun. New episodes of The Breakdown with Jay Jacksonrao are available wherever you get your podcasts. Why this Trump's "Small Price to Pay" Comment is out of Context

At a Nebraska rally on Monday, Trump said the cost of the Iran war is "a small price to pay," then went on to name Los Angeles and San Diego. The clip spread fast, and Democrats and at least one Republican criticized it. The White House says he was arguing the U.S. is fighting to stop Iran from ever reaching those cities with a nuclear weapon. Here's the full sequence of what he said, what the context does and doesn't change, and why the phrasing still drew bipartisan pushback. Being honest about a quote matters more than a quick gotcha.

Why Conservatives Are Mad About Arkansas Welfare Ad

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a welfare-to-work ad featuring "Brad," a white man who chooses to game instead of work. Rather than praise for going after fraud, she got attacked by her own base; Matt Walsh, Sean Davis, and others accused her of dishonestly making white men the face of welfare, insisting the "real" recipients are women and people of color. The backlash accidentally confirmed exactly what critics have said about the "welfare queen" myth for decades: it was never about facts, it was about who the right wants you to blame. We break down the ad, the meltdown, and what it reveals.

Why Title IX Is Under Fire The Future of Education in the Trump Era

The Department of Education made two major moves this week, and both deserve real scrutiny. First, Secretary Linda McMahon formally rescinded the President Joe Biden era Title IX interpretation that protected students based on sexual orientation and gender identity, reinstating 2020 era rules and continuing the administration's push to bar transgender athletes from women's sports. Second, a new federal rule ties student loan eligibility to graduates' earnings, if a program's graduates don't out earn people with only a high school diploma for two of three years, it loses federal Direct Loan access, and can lose Pell Grant eligibility too. The Department disputes framing this as "banning majors," but fields like social work, education, and the arts are the ones most likely to fail the test. I break down both decisions and why treating vulnerable students and undervalued professions as expendable is bad policy either way.

Did JD Vance and Dr. Oz really find $2.2 Billion in Obamacare Fraud?

JD Vance and Dr. Mehmet Oz held a press conference announcing their task force stopped $2.2 billion in Obamacare "fraud" by disenrolling 750,000 people from ACA marketplace insurance. But the actual process reveals something far less dramatic than fraud: the task force flagged enrollees with incomplete information or who hadn't used their coverage, asked insurers to reach out, and canceled anyone who didn't respond within 30 days. Health policy experts note there are countless legitimate reasons someone might miss that window; a piece of mail lost in a pile, a call mistaken for a telemarketer, an email sent to spam. The timing matters. This announcement lands right as Republicans face the Susan Collins pay-for-play scandal, Trump's failed Iran war, and growing GOP panic over losing Congress in the midterms. The $2.2 billion figure is a rounding error against nearly $7 trillion in annual federal spending but real people are about to find out their coverage is gone, some not until they're already at an emergency room. We break down what actually happened, why "fraud" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in this story, and why this is a distraction dressed up as accountability.

Trump vs. The Press: CNN, MS NOW, and Politico Banned From White House

Trump just announced he's banning the Press, specifically CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House, calling their coverage "FICTION and LIES" and threatening more outlets could follow. The ACLU is already calling this unconstitutional, and legal experts agree: the government cannot selectively bar press access based on how outlets cover the president. The timing here matters more than the ban itself. This isn't coming from a position of strength, instead it's coming from a White House getting crushed on every front. The economy is struggling and prices keep climbing. The SAVE Act, a signature GOP voting priority, couldn't get through Congress. His attempt to manipulate mail-in voting just got blocked at the Supreme Court. Add it all up, and banning the outlets covering these failures isn't a power move it's what panic looks like when you can't control the story any other way.

Republicans Think Their Voters Are Stupid, Here Are 4 Stories That Prove It

Four stories this week, one clear pattern: Republican leadership thinks their voters simply aren't that bright. Trump promised a $5,000 "dividend" to every American adult, but only if Republicans win the midterms (both chambers of Congress). His own party controls the House, Senate, and White House right now. If this were real economic policy, he could deliver it today. Instead, it's a bribe dressed up as a policy win, fueled by math that doesn't add up. Tucker Carlson hosted a guest who called algebra "fake math;" dismissing anyone who values it as living "in the matrix," an anti-intellectual stance Carlson enthusiastically endorsed on air coupled with the guest's blatant antisemitism. Mitch McConnell returned to the Senate after a three month absence, arriving in a wheelchair, visibly thinner, his speech noticeably slower; a stark contrast to the "not quite back to 100%" framing his office is using to minimize real concerns about his fitness for office. Barely sentient, the GOP pushes his clearly dying man to it's voters and demands they accept him as a proper representation of their interest in Congress. Lastly, Trump promised gas will drop below $2 a gallon right after the midterms, with zero explanation of how, following two straight years of the same broken promise. Four stories. One pattern. I break down why Republican leadership keeps betting that their voters won't notice.

Why The Right Only Cares When It Happens To Them

He cheered for ICE until ICE arrested him, and now he finally gets it. Milo Yiannopoulos spent years advocating for harsh ICE tactics, then was arrested by ICE himself and described the "institutionalized brutality" firsthand. I break down why this is bigger than Milo; it's a pattern of experience-dependent empathy on the right. In this breakdown: why Republicans only empathize after it happens to them, how Trump scrapped the JCPOA Iran nuclear deal just because Obama's name was on it, why gas prices and measles outbreaks (vaccine available since 1963, eliminated in the US in 2000) keep coming back when we ignore experts, and why RFK Jr's anti-vaccine push is costing lives. Do I have empathy for Milo? No. But there's a lesson here about what happens when "gut feeling" replaces expertise. The Truth About Trump's Latest Week of Pettiness

The economy is struggling. The Iran war drags on with no resolution. And this week, the Trump administration spent its energy on three genuinely petty grievances instead. The State Department is exploring selling a Kehinde Wiley painting, the artist behind Obama's official portrait, after officials called it "woke" and "aesthetically terrifying," removing it from a US embassy in the Dominican Republic. Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America," escalating his trade war with Canada over a shared international waterway that's been called Ontario for over 400 years which predates both countries. And Department of Justice lawyers are now threatening to demolish the Kennedy Center in Washington DC entirely if a court doesn't let the administration add Trump's name to the building and continue with his proposed renovations, calling the beloved arts institution "decrepit" and "embarrassing" in official legal filings. I break down all three stories and what they reveal: an administration treating symbolic culture-war grievances as a governing priority while the actual problems — inflation, an unresolved war, a struggling economy continue to go unaddressed. This is what "focus" looks like from Trump's White House.

Don't Trust Hakeem Jeffries to Fight Fascism. Here's Why.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries met privately with Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and closest outside adviser, in New York City recently, just weeks before the midterm elections that could hand Jeffries the Speakership. The two reportedly discussed potential "common ground" on housing, immigration, and cost of living. Critics on the left were quick to point out the problem: Kushner holds no official government role, has no formal accountability, and has spent years profiting from proximity to power while facilitating some of this administration's most corrupt dealings. I break down why this meeting is symptomatic of a much bigger problem: Democratic leadership, from Jeffries to Chuck Schumer, simply isn't built for the moment we're in. This isn't a normal administration looking for bipartisan wins. It's a authoritarian government that needs opposition with spine, not leaders looking for polite common ground with the people enabling it. I make the case for why Democratic voters should be sending a clear message heading into 2026 and beyond: new leadership, or nothing changes.

Of Course He Screwed Up the Beef, Welcome to Trump Steaks 2.0

Beef prices just hit a record $6.89 per pound, and the honest answer is that this isn't entirely Trump's fault. Years of drought have shrunk the US cattle herd to its lowest level since 1951, and that structural problem predates this administration by over a decade. But that's not the whole story, and pretending it is lets real policy failures off the hook. In March 2025, the Trump administration's dismantling of USAID shut down a program specifically responsible for monitoring and containing the New World screwworm in Central America. Over 1,300 USDA workers took federal workforce reduction buyouts, and screwworm-specific programs were among the casualties. A parasite eradicated from the US since 1966 is now back in Texas cattle for the first time in nearly 60 years this is a direct, traceable consequence of gutting the exact prevention infrastructure that kept it out. On top of that, Donald Trump's blanket tariffs raised costs on imported cattle, equipment, and beef trimmings that the industry relies on to meet demand, while a cattle import suspension from Mexico removed over a million head of feeder cattle from the supply chain. The drought set the stage. The policy choices made it worse. Now his solution is to remove tariffs to make importing beef cheaper. This exposes his lie that tariffs are not responsible for driving up prices on goods for American consumers. Pay attention to what he does, not what he says.

Kid Gloves: How the Media Protects Republicans From Themselves

Republican Senate candidate, Darline Graham, just admitted on live TV that national security "isn't her thing" and the debate moderator, Greta Van Susteren went on her show the next day to apologize for asking the question. This isn't just about one debate. It's about 60 years of the right wing convincing the media that holding Republicans accountable is "liberal bias" and a press corps so scared of the label that it's been pulling its punches ever since.

Abdul El-Sayed Up 7, and the Center Isn't as Unmovable as You Think

A new Susquehanna poll shows Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed leading Republican Mike Rogers by 7 points, 46% to 39%, in Michigan's Senate race which is a notable shift after weeks of mixed and often unfavorable polling following a brutal primary with Haley Stevens. This comes after months of a persistent narrative claiming centrist Democrats would struggle to unite behind a progressive nominee, or worse, quietly sit the race out. That narrative has never actually held up historically, and it isn't holding up now. In this episode of The Breakdown, I look at why centrists abandoning a progressive nominee in the general election essentially never happens on the Democratic side, why centrist and progressive Democrats actually agree on the substantial majority of policy issues once you look past primary season rhetoric, and why the "center of the party" is not some fixed, unmovable position but rather it's a coalition that moves and consolidates once the choice becomes binary. El-Sayed's current numbers are a real time example of that dynamic playing out, even as the broader polling picture in this race remains competitive and contested.

Trump Just Threatened to Bomb a US Ally, Because He Can't Close a Deal

The 60 day deadline for a US-Iran peace deal just expired, and instead of a resolution, Trump is threatening to bomb Oman, a longtime US ally, for allegedly "getting in the way" of reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Iran claims it already reached its own agreement with Oman on shipping routes. Trump is now demanding Iran "raise the white flag" while offering no real diplomatic path forward. Shipping traffic through the strait nearly ground to a halt this weekend. Oil prices are climbing. In this first episode of The Breakdown, I unpack what's actually happening in these negotiations, why Trump's approach to foreign policy consistently substitutes threats for strategy, and why this pattern points toward more war, not less. Trump doesn't close deals through diplomacy but rather he closes them through escalation, and when that doesn't work, the threats just get louder and more reckless. I break down what comes next, why Oman becoming a target should alarm everyone regardless of party, and what this moment reveals about the administration's actual foreign policy doctrine. Spoiler alert: there isn't one beyond force. This is The Breakdown. Welcome.
