   Bad Leaders Suck...Your Trust

Think about the last time you gave a leader your best. You didn’t do it because they asked. You did it because you trusted them. When that trust goes, people rarely make a scene. They just quietly stop handing you the good stuff. In the finale of Bad Leaders Suck, Jeremy tells a story he has never shared publicly. At 16, he was an unpaid drummer on the main stage of a church with over 5,000 members. A meeting he didn’t see coming ended with “if you trust in God, then he will provide,” and he stayed away from church for three and a half years. He and Henry use that story to show why trust underpins energy, confidence, and creativity; how leaders drain it day to day; and how good ones earn it back. Henry adds scripture and a story about a friend who kept his confidence. Trust can be rebuilt. It just takes longer to rebuild than it did to break. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why people rarely quit a leader they’ve stopped trusting The three things trust rests on, and which two a competent leader can still lose The say-do gap, self-protection, and being unreliable out of sight Why betrayal by someone in authority sticks harder than a mistake What the roots of the word “trust” say about being solid enough to lean on Three ways good leaders rebuild trust -- This week’s Breakthrough Challenge: Think of one small promise you made this month. If you kept it, thank yourself. If not, go to that person, own it, and renegotiate it out loud. Then, if you’re carrying a break in trust, finish this sentence: “I can’t count on ___ to ___.” Ask whether it’s true of everyone or only the person who taught you that, and take one small, safe step toward trusting someone again. Next week: a new five-week series, Thanks for Nothing. Expect nothing, appreciate everything. Bad Leaders Suck...Your Creativity

Somewhere on your team, in your family, or in your church, someone has an idea that would make things better and has decided not to say it out loud. The idea isn’t bad. They’ve just learned what happens to ideas around there. Jeremy Flagg and Henry Ballard continue the Bad Leaders Suck series with creativity. Jeremy takes you into his first staff meeting as a salaried youth pastor, where the senior pastor asked for questions, got a full page of them, and two coworkers slid their chairs away. Henry puts a name on what happened at that table, and Jeremy lays out what a camera would have caught: an invitation that wasn’t real, an answer that came before any curiosity, and a room that taught everyone the rules. They bring in Amy Edmondson’s research on why employees hold back, Teresa Amabile’s work on creativity, and Moses calling Bezalel and Oholiab to build the Tabernacle. They name three patterns that drain creativity (shooting ideas down on contact, burying or taking them, controlling the how) and three that grow it. Henry remembers a CEO who gave him a destination and room to design the route, and Jeremy shares the St. Jude worker who says, “I cure cancer.” In this episode, you’ll learn: What a leader does that you could point to on camera when a team stops talking How the “meeting after the meeting” shows what your team really thinks Three habits that kill ideas and the three that bring them back What “plussing” is and how Pixar uses it Why the military calls clear purpose with an open method “commander’s intent” -- This week’s Breakthrough Challenge has two parts. If you lead anyone, the next time someone brings you an idea, say two words before anything else: “say more.” If you use any piece of it, say their name out loud. If you’ve been holding ideas back, name the unspoken rule you’ve been following and where you learned it, then offer one idea to one person in the safest setting you can find. Bad Leaders Suck...Your Confidence

Somewhere along the way, someone looked at you once and decided what you were capable of. Maybe a boss, a coach, a teacher, or a parent. You took their word for it, and you’ve been living inside that verdict ever since. Jeremy Flagg and Henry Ballard know how that verdict gets handed down, and how it gets overturned. Jeremy tells the story of a seventh grader and a thrown chalkboard eraser. Together they name three habits that drain confidence and three ways good leaders put it back. Left alone, an unchallenged verdict costs you the ideas you never offer and the attempts you never make. In this episode, you’ll learn: The three things a bad leader does that you could point to on tape Why belief in your ability often predicts performance better than skill What the Pygmalion and Golem effects show about expectations Three patterns that drain confidence and the three that rebuild it Why discouragement means taking someone’s heart away -- This week’s Breakthrough Challenge has two parts. If you lead anyone, tell one person something specific you’ve seen them do well. Skip “good job” and name the thing. If you’re on the receiving end, write down a belief about your ability that came from someone else and ask: is this a fact or one person’s opinion, and what did that person actually know about what I’m capable of?
