Key Points
Paul longed to see the church so he could impart a spiritual gift to strengthen them. The gifts exist so we can mutually encourage one another’s faith.
Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights. There is no variation or shadow in Him. He is the Giver.
To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. The gift is not for you. It is for the body.
The Spirit apportions to each one individually as He wills. The gift is sovereign. He holds it. We minister with it.
God arranged the members in the body, each one of them as He chose. You do not get to pick who is next to you. The weaker parts are indispensable.
Love is the more excellent way. Without love, even the highest gifts are a noisy gong. All of it must be administered through love.
You discover the gift by longing to strengthen someone else and then showing up. The need reveals what He has given you.
Discussion
Paul said he longed to see them so he could strengthen them. Where do you sense a longing to strengthen someone right now?
“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” How does that change the way you think about “my gift”?
Pastor Bob said the starting place is offering yourself as a living sacrifice. What is one thing you are still holding back from that offering?
God arranged the members as He chose. Who in the body has God placed near you that you would not have chosen?
“If one member suffers, all suffer together.” Who is suffering right now that the body needs to suffer with?
How is “show up and long to strengthen someone” different from waiting until you know what your gift is?
1 Corinthians 13 says without love the gifts are nothing. Where do you need love to catch up with a gift you already have?

The Multi-Purpose Room
Key Points
God gives many gifts for one purpose. The multi-purpose room only works when different people do different things toward the same end.
Gifts are not for display.
We are many members, but one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Isolation keeps us from ever knowing what we’ve been given.
Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them.
You’ve received something. You are responsible for it. Someone else needs it. And when you use it, God is glorified.
Encouragement is a real gift. You will never know you have it until you open your mouth and encourage someone.
Do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. The primary place these gifts operate is inside the body.
Gifts are varied, but they come from the same Spirit. Faith, healing, helps, teaching, mercy, giving — none is better; all are needed.
You discover a gift by putting yourself in the middle of the room, looking, listening, and stepping toward a need.
Jesus is the only one who had every gift. He is the Gift Giver, and he came first to serve and to save.
Discussion
In the multi-purpose room, what role are you naturally drawn to? What happens if everyone is drawn to the same thing?
Pastor Bob said, “You are a member of the person next to you.” Where does isolation still keep you from living like that?
Romans 12 says not to think of yourself more highly than you ought. How does that change the way you hold a gift?
Patty encouraged a shy coworker who had never heard she was loved. Who around you needs a simple word of encouragement this week?
“You’ve received something. You’re responsible for it. Someone else needs it. God is glorified.” Which of those four is hardest for you right now?
How is discovering a gift by stepping toward a need different from waiting until you feel ready?
If the household of faith is the primary place these gifts operate, where is one person in this body you can serve this week?

You've Received a Gift
Key Points
The first and greatest gift is salvation. By grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing.
We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
After the resurrection the Spirit was poured out richly on the church to convict of sin, point to the righteousness of Jesus, and empower ordinary people.
Every other gift is on loan from the Gift Giver. It is not for you. It is for someone else.
Pastors equip the saints for the work of the ministry. They do not do all the ministry.
When each part is working properly, the body grows and builds itself up in love. A part sitting out disables the rest.
Gifts are discovered organically, not by a test. You see them when you step toward a need.
Gifts are not the fruit of the Spirit. Fruit comes from abiding. Gifts are distributed by grace to edify the body.
We stir one another up to love and good works, and we do not neglect meeting together, because the day is drawing near.
God sees people, not projects, not ministries, not numbers.
Discussion
Pastor Bob said the only gift that is mainly for you is salvation. How does that change the way you hold every other gift?
Where have you been treating a gift as if it belonged to you?
Oscar fixed a car in a parking lot and a woman got saved. What ordinary skill or kindness is already in your hands?
“When each part is working properly…” Who in the body is missing your part right now?
Hebrews 10 says to stir one another up to love and good works. Who has stirred you, and who might you spur this week?
If God sees people and not projects, what changes in how you serve?
