Here is the thing. Self-control is not ultimately about discipline. Paul does not call it the fruit of human determination. He calls it the fruit of the Spirit, in Galatians 5:22 (ESV). That means we don't manufacture it. We walk in it day by day, depending on the Spirit He gives.

Compelling Faithfulness
We tend to think faithfulness is the feeling of loyalty we have when things are going well. But the Spirit produces something sturdier than that in us. Faithfulness trusts God's heart even when His hand is doing something we did not ask for. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were not delivered from the fire. They were met in it. That distinction matters for how we live with strong faith!

Compelling Kindness & Goodness
Titus 3:4-5 puts it plainly. "When the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy". That is the ground we stand on. God moved toward us first. He did not wait for us to clean up. And so now, because of what He has done, we get to do the same for others.
