BDGS: #091 - Defensive Gun Use Happens Every Day: Jake of Good Guy With a Gun

Somebody on Facebook told Jake that defensive gun uses "never happen." He answered by posting one every day for a hundred days, and the guy cried uncle. Two years later, Jake has a Substack with a new verified story every morning and a desk calendar that puts a documented defensive gun use on every date of 2027. Put your headphones on for this one. JP Garcia sits down with Jake of Good Guy With A Gun and returning guest William Wallis, who defended his own family in a carjacking, to dig into why these incidents vanish from memory even when the news covers them, how a story with no 911 call still ends up documented, what Chicago teaches about hard targets, and what surprised Jake most after cataloging hundreds of cases: the number of teenagers on the wrong end of them. You'll also hear two wives' very different paths to concealed carry, a gun-show thief who tried to buy legally, and a parking-lot robbery at a shooting match that went exactly how you'd expect. What you'll take away: Gear: why most defensive gun uses end with no shots fired, and what that means for carrying consistently. Training: JP's case for matches as the safest place to pressure-test skills you can't practice at a square range. Safety: Jake's framing that every defensive gun use is a failure upstream, and why responsible owners train so they never need one. Follow the show so the next episode lands in your feed. BDGS: #90 - Stress Testing Your Skills: Kenny Florian on USPSA, Jiu-Jitsu, and Weapon Retention

What happens when a UFC veteran picks up a pistol for the first time at 40-something and lands in A class inside two years? Kenny Florian tells JP Garcia and Brandon Elias exactly how — and where it still goes wrong. Put your headphones on for this one. Kenny walks through three days and 18 stages at USPSA Factory Gun Nationals in Hurricane, Utah, and the stage-planning debate it sparked: scout six stages at a time, or walk all 18 on day one? Brandon and JP each defend a different answer. From there it turns into a clinic on execution over efficiency, and the difference between conscious and unconscious shooting. Then the conversation goes somewhere most shooting shows can't: Kenny on jiu-jitsu, distance, and weapon retention — including the one sentence about drawing at three feet that every carrier should hear — plus a frank take on gun-disarm "secrets" that don't survive a resisting partner. Rain-soaked Carolina Classic stories, a timer that didn't fire, the Dragons Cup, and what it actually takes to go from hobbyist to professional round it out. Three things you'll leave with: a stage plan you can execute under match nerves (training), why gear won't fix a fundamentals problem (gear), and why distance and body position come before the draw (safety). If this is your first time here, hit Follow so the next one lands in your feed. Want Kenny-style video review on your own stage runs? patreon.com/bdgs has a free tier and paid coaching tiers. BDGS: #089 - Team USA's IPSC Shotgun World Shoot Haul: 10 Golds, One Texas Gun Shop

Twelve guns on the Open podium at the IPSC Shotgun World Shoot. Eight of them came out of one shop in Texas. Lan Nguyen of Dissident Arms is back to walk JP and Brandon through Team USA's run in Corinth, Greece — the medal count, the ammo that almost didn't make it, and the shotgun skills most shooters never think about. Put your headphones on for this one. You'll hear how three pallets of shotshells got from an Athens storefront to a range an hour away in a rental van, why a single stray pellet on a clay painted red costs you the stage, and what "one inch per yard" actually means when a no-shoot is stacked in front of your target. What you'll take away: Gear: why a consistent, reliable gun matters more than the fastest gun at a major match Training: pattern your shotgun at real distances — mechanical offset is a skill, not trivia Safety: muzzle-over-berm DQs, fault-line discipline, and why you don't tear your gun down the night before a match Want JP to review your draw, transitions, or shotgun movement on video?
