Telo’s Big Bet on a Small Pickup | 1 Smart Business Story
There are more than 60 million pickup trucks on the road in the United States today.
Those trucks are only getting bigger. The GMC Hummer EV pickup weighs over 9,000 pounds. Ford’s new F-150 is 20 feet long and over six feet tall. Dodge Ram 1500s are almost seven feet wide.
Telo Trucks is betting that what many Americans want is the exact opposite. Its debut model, the MT1, is about the size of a Mini Cooper. Clocking in at just over 12 feet long, the startup’s fully electric pickup can fit up to five passengers or haul 4x8 plywood sheets. Think of it as a lifestyle truck that can do heavy lifting, too.
The big question now is, how many people will cough up over $40,000 for a mini truck?
Inc. senior editor Rob Verger breaks it all down on this edition of 1 Smart Business Story with host Tim Crino.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
how Telo Trucks plans on massive growth by doing the exact opposite of sector leaders;
what the state of the electric vehicle market is today;
and why it’s so difficult to make an auto startup profitable.
Plus, what the best hiring committees have in common, on this week’s Action Items.

Ticks Are Fueling a Booming New Industry With Allergies | 1 Smart Business Story
Alpha-gal syndrome is scary stuff. Simply consuming pork or beef can send affected people into an anaphylactic shock, potentially killing them.
Even consuming cross-contaminated food or, say, a pill containing beef or pork byproducts is enough to do the trick.
The alpha-gal allergy comes from the bite of a lone star tick. Once common only across the South and the Midwest, these critters’ range is expanding across the nation — bringing alpha-gal along, too.
Some researchers estimate there are as many as 450,000 cases and climbing. For founders, this is a tremendous opportunity to step in. The fear of alpha-gal has meant a boon for pest prevention businesses, tick-preventing clothes, and more.
Inc.’s Ali Donaldson joins host Chloe Aiello on this 1 Smart Business Story to take us into the burgeoning alpha-gal economy.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
How a potentially life-threatening tick-borne allergy is spreading across the U.S.
And how founders are helping out and cashing in.
Plus, how to build a company around AI on this week’s Action Items.
