Sit Down, Slow Down: Deena Nasr, PA-C, on Earning Trust in Trauma Care

Deena Nasr, MHS, PA-C, is a certified Physician Assistant in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and the Division of Hospital Medicine at a major urban hospital, where she also serves as Director of Advanced Practice Providers overseeing roughly 75 PAs and NPs. She's a Clinical Assistant Professor at the George Washington University Physician Assistant Program, holds a BS in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland and an MS in Health Sciences from Duke University School of Medicine, and is board-certified by the NCCPA. In this episode, Deena traces her path from watching her mother — a physician trained in Cairo — study surgical videos on the family TV, to competitive athlete, to hospital medicine, and finally to orthopedic trauma. She and Larry dig into what compassionate care actually looks like when a patient arrives by ambulance in crisis: introducing herself, asking permission before diving into "why are you here," acknowledging what happened, and offering honest reassurance — a 30-60 second exchange she says can change a patient's entire physiological state. Highlights include: How her mother's path from Cairo to U.S. medical practice shaped her calling to care for people The moment a PT clinic patient introduced her to the PA profession — and changed her career trajectory Why she deliberately built a foundation in hospital medicine before specializing in orthopedic surgery Her framework for connecting with trauma patients in the first minutes after a life-altering injury Coaching a new advanced practice provider through a bedside communication breakdown, and the perspective-shift exercise she used How culture gets set (and reset) inside a large hospital system, service line by service line A candid take on what the U.S. healthcare system gets right — universal emergency access, equipment standards, treatment regardless of ability to pay — compared to her family's experience with her grandmother's stroke care in Cairo Two stories of cultural humility in action: a rural North Carolina patient who couldn't understand her accent, and a DC patient who didn't know what to do with a prescription slip "Reading the breadcrumbs" — the elderly patient who stopped leaving her house after a fainting episode, and the conversation that helped her get her life back The story behind a patient in recovery from heroin addiction who refused a blood transfusion — until Deena sat down Why she believes clinicians don't need more time with patients, just to be perceived differently Lightning round: her one-word care philosophy, the podcast that shaped how she thinks about care, and what she wishes every patient knew about her Connect with Deena: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deena-n-66a78b32/ If this conversation moved you, like, follow, or share the Care to Grow Show — every share helps put care back into healthcare.

The Power of Love: Winston Meikle, MSN, MBA, HCA, CCRN, on Quantum Physics, Consciousness & Love-Based Nursing

On this episode of The Care2Grow Show®, Dr. Larry Arbeitman welcomes Winston Meikle, MSN, MBA, HCA, CCRN — a registered nurse, educator, and healthcare entrepreneur whose four decades in nursing have shaped a bold vision for modern medicine grounded not in fear, but in love. Beginning his career as an LPN and rising through the full continuum of nursing, Winston is the founder and CEO of Loving Care Partners and founder and COO of Mobile Lab Techs, and the author of The Power of Love: A Nursing Theory. In this episode, they discuss: Winston's 40-year journey from LPN to ICU nurse, and the series of unexplainable "coincidences" over the course of his career that led him to believe love, not fear, is the true organizing force behind healing. How quantum physics — including the double-slit experiment, the delayed-choice experiment, and a striking study involving baby chicks imprinting on a random-motion robot — offers scientific grounding for what he calls the "power of love" in human consciousness and healing. A powerful story from his ICU career: a critically ill patient with a life-threatening device infection, where Winston asked a Reiki practitioner to stay away from the patient's room after she predicted his death, and nursed him back to recovery through months of intentional, loving care. His 4-A framework — Acknowledge, Accept, Adopt, Actualize — for helping providers shift from unconsciously projecting fear and stress into patient interactions to intentionally leading with love. Why he teaches his nursing students "love-based nursing" instead of the fear-based orientation ("don't lose your license") that dominates most healthcare education. Dr. Masaru Emoto's water crystal studies and what they suggest about the impact of intention and language on the body — including why telling a patient "you'll never get better" can be genuinely harmful. How he applies loving intention even to something as small and uncomfortable as a blood draw in his mobile phlebotomy business — and why patients specifically request him by name. His current projects, including a white paper with Dr. Apurv Gupta on building "loving organizations" in healthcare, and his upcoming platform, Loving Care Partners, designed to educate and empower patients navigating the healthcare system. A lightning round covering his care philosophy in one word (love), the person who's influenced how he thinks (Napoleon Hill), and finishing the sentence: "Care is... a sacred, divine experience." About Winston Meikle Winston Meikle, MSN, MBA, HCA, CCRN, is a registered nurse, educator, and healthcare entrepreneur whose four decades in nursing have shaped a bold new vision for modern medicine — one grounded not in fear, but in love. The First Person to Sit Down: Dr. Savitha Rao, MD, on Presence, Empathy & Integrative Psychiatry

On this episode of The Care2Grow Show®, Dr. Larry Arbeitman welcomes Dr. Savitha Rao, a double board-certified adult, child, and adolescent psychiatrist who recently opened her own integrative psychiatry practice, Walls Down Wellness, in Red Bank, New Jersey. Drawing from traditional medical training as well as formal study in functional medicine and integrative psychiatry, Dr. Rao designs customized treatment plans that go beyond medication management to consider the whole person. In this episode, they discuss: Dr. Rao's own journey with depression and anxiety, which came to a head during residency, and how incorporating therapy, lifestyle changes, meditation, and the gut-brain connection alongside medication eventually allowed her to move beyond needing it — an experience that now shapes how she treats her own patients. Why she believes integrative psychiatry isn't a replacement for traditional, evidence-based training but a way to build on it, especially with children and adolescents whose brains are still developing. How she cares for the whole family, not just the child in front of her, and why she sees a parent's emotional state, and even marital dynamics that surface in the room, as valuable information rather than a distraction. The power of presence and simple, active listening — including research showing patients feel truly heard in as little as 50 seconds, while the average doctor listens for only 17 to 27 seconds before interrupting. How she intentionally designed her office — a couch instead of a desk, no barriers between her and her patients, meaningful art on the walls, natural materials — to help regulate a patient's nervous system before a word is even spoken. A powerful story about a homeless patient who refused a life-saving blood transfusion for hours, then signed the consent immediately once a provider simply sat down at his level — because, he said, she was the first person to do it. Her own self-care practices, including a non-negotiable daily transcendental meditation practice, prioritizing sleep, and time at the beach, and why she believes physician burnout isn't caused by caring too much, but by not checking in with your own needs. Her new newsletter, Buddy Business, exploring topics like the loneliness epidemic and the vagus nerve's role in social connection. A lightning round covering her care philosophy in one word (integrative), the people who've shaped how she cares (her parents), and finishing the sentence: "Care is... being present." About Dr. Savitha Rao Dr. Savitha Rao is a double board-certified adult, child, and adolescent psychiatrist who has recently opened a private integrative psychiatry practice, Walls Down Wellness, in downtown Red Bank, NJ. Her prior experience spans multiple psychiatric settings, including inpatient, outpatient, emergency room, and consult/liaison. Drawing from traditional medical training as well as formal training in both functional medicine and integrative psychiatry, she works closely with patients to design customized treatment plans based on their individual needs, taking an integrative approach to mental health that considers the whole person. Dr. Rao was born and raised in New Jersey and currently resides in Asbury Park. She attended Rutgers University for her undergraduate degree and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School for her medical degree, completing both a general psychiatry residency and a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
