Welcome to The China Memo.
I'm your host: born in China, trained in Western finance, now based in Switzerland. I read what Chinese policymakers, companies, and business people actually say — from a local perspective — and translate it for those tracking China who want the signal without noise.
Fact-based. No speculation. We focus on structural trends.

23. TikTok: How a Chinese Algorithm Conquered the World
The standard frame for TikTok in Western coverage is national security — a Chinese app, Chinese data, Chinese algorithm. That frame is not fabricated, but it is incomplete. This episode takes the security concern seriously before showing what it misses: TikTok is the first Chinese consumer software product to genuinely reshape global behaviour at scale, succeeding through genuine product innovation — the content graph over the social graph — rather than cost competition. The For You feed changed the creator economics of short-form video and made TikTok core marketing infrastructure for seven million US businesses. Three markers to watch: the outcome of the US divestiture process, TikTok Shop's trajectory in Western markets, and whether any other Chinese consumer app follows TikTok's global path.

22. China's Luxury Market: From Boom to Maturity
China's personal luxury goods market contracted 3–5% in 2025 following a sharper drop in 2024. But the aggregate numbers mask a wide dispersion: Hermès grew while LVMH, Burberry, and Kering declined double digits in Asia. This episode traces three phases of Chinese luxury demand — the boom years, the post-Covid correction, and the current maturation — and identifies the three structural forces that make this more than a cyclical reset: Guochao brand competition moving up the value chain, grey market and resale normalisation, and the policy overhang around conspicuous consumption. Three markers to watch: onshore spending trajectory relative to macro conditions, Guochao brand performance at the premium tier, and grey market volume as a share of total luxury sales.

21. The $6,000 Robot: How China Got There Before Tesla Did
Unitree’s R1 launched in 2025 at under $6,000, undercutting Tesla’s Optimus before Optimus has even reached the open market. This episode compares the two humanoid robots on price, hardware capability, and underlying AI architecture, then asks who actually gains from each company’s approach. Tesla is betting on a centralized AI platform that Musk says could eventually represent 80 percent of the company’s long-term value; Unitree is betting on cheap, modular hardware built on a decade of Chinese manufacturing experience. The more consequential split, though, may not be engineering at all — it may be a wave of 2025 and 2026 US legislation aimed at restricting Chinese humanoid robots from federal and regulated use. We track what to watch as both companies, and Washington, make their next move.
