CSP Classic: Stop throwing the Engineer under the bus | MIDWEEK SERVICE | with Prentiss L. Thompson

Midweek Service with Prentiss L. Thompson When something goes wrong during a church service, the sound engineer is often the first person everyone blames. The microphone feeds back. A vocalist cannot hear the monitor. The livestream audio sounds uneven. A speaker walks onto the platform with the wrong microphone. Someone makes a last-minute change that the production team was never told about—and somehow, it still becomes the engineer’s fault. In this episode of The Church Sound Podcast, Prentiss L. Thompson addresses the unhealthy habit of throwing the audio engineer under the bus whenever a technical problem occurs. The person behind the console has an important responsibility, but church production is a team effort. Pastors, worship leaders, musicians, vocalists, speakers, production volunteers, and ministry leaders all contribute to the final result. When communication, preparation, or cooperation is missing, the engineer cannot solve every problem from behind the soundboard. In This Episode Why church sound engineers are often blamed for every technical problem The difference between an engineering mistake and a ministry preparation problem How last-minute changes affect the audio and production teams Why microphone technique matters The importance of musicians and vocalists participating in soundcheck How stage volume can limit what the engineer can accomplish Why missing rehearsals creates problems during the service The need for pastors and worship leaders to communicate with production teams Correcting technical issues without embarrassing volunteers publicly Creating accountability without turning one person into the scapegoat Building trust between the platform and the production department Recognizing the engineer as part of the ministry team The Engineer Cannot Fix Everything A skilled engineer can improve the mix, manage frequencies, control levels, and respond to unexpected situations. However, the engineer cannot completely correct poor microphone placement, inconsistent vocal technique, excessive stage volume, unprepared speakers, or changes that were never communicated. Sometimes the problem begins long before anyone touches the soundboard. A strong service requires cooperation from everyone involved. Musicians must manage their volume. Vocalists must use microphones correctly. Speakers must know which microphone to use. Worship leaders must communicate arrangements and transitions. Ministry leaders must give the production team enough information to prepare. Stop Blaming and Start Communicating Publicly blaming the engineer does not solve the problem. It damages trust, discourages volunteers, and creates tension between the stage and the technical team. When something goes wrong, leadership should investigate what happened before assigning blame. The goal should be to understand the cause, correct the process, and prevent the same issue from happening again. Constructive conversations should happen privately and respectfully. If the engineer made a mistake, provide clear feedback and additional training. If the problem came from poor preparation or communication, the rest of the team must also accept responsibility. Accountability should apply to everyone—not only the person sitting behind the console. Production Is a Team Ministry The sound engineer is not separate from the worship experience. That person is helping the congregation hear the music, the message, the prayer, and every other important moment of the service. Instead of treating the engineer like someone who simply pushes buttons, churches should include production leaders in rehearsals, planning meetings, service discussions, and creative decisions. When the technical team receives information early, they can prepare properly. When they are treated with respect, they are more confident asking questions and identifying potential problems before the service begins. Key Takeaway Stop throwing the engineer under the bus. Every technical problem is not automatically the engineer’s fault. Church production is a shared responsibility that requires preparation, communication, cooperation, training, and mutual respect. When mistakes happen, correct the issue without attacking the person. Build better systems, improve communication, and give the entire team the tools needed to succeed. The goal is not to determine who deserves the blame. The goal is to make sure the message can be heard clearly and the ministry can move forward together. The Church Sound Podcast provides practical training, conversations, and encouragement for church audio engineers, media teams, production leaders, volunteers, and churches seeking to strengthen their technical ministries.

CSP Classic: The Importance of Communication | MIDWEEK SERVICE

Midweek Service with Prentiss L. Thompson Strong church production does not begin with equipment—it begins with communication. In this Midweek Service episode of The Church Sound Podcast, Prentiss L. Thompson discusses why clear, consistent communication is essential for every church media and production team. From last-minute service changes to unclear expectations, many technical problems are not actually caused by the equipment. They are caused by people not sharing the right information at the right time. Audio engineers, musicians, worship leaders, pastors, camera operators, livestream teams, and service coordinators may all be working toward the same goal, but the service can quickly become disorganized when those teams are not communicating with one another. Good communication allows the technical team to prepare, anticipate changes, solve problems, and serve the ministry with confidence. It also creates healthier relationships between church leadership, creative teams, and volunteers. In This Episode Why communication is one of the most important parts of church production How poor communication creates unnecessary technical problems The importance of sharing service details before Sunday morning Why worship leaders and pastors should communicate changes with the media team Helping volunteers understand their roles and responsibilities The value of production meetings, rehearsals, and service run-throughs Avoiding last-minute surprises whenever possible Creating a clear chain of communication within the ministry Why technical teams should feel comfortable asking questions Communicating corrections without embarrassing or discouraging volunteers Building trust between leadership and the production department Using planning documents, schedules, group messages, and service outlines effectively Communication Before the Service The media team should not have to discover the entire service order while the service is already happening. Whenever possible, the team should receive important information in advance, including: The order of service Song selections and arrangements Microphone and stage requirements Video or presentation cues Livestream instructions Special guests or additional speakers Changes to the regular program Any creative or technical elements being added to the service Advance communication gives the team time to prepare instead of constantly reacting. Communication During the Service Even with strong preparation, unexpected changes may still happen. When they do, the church should have a clear method for communicating those changes. Everyone should understand who is authorized to give production cues and how those cues will be delivered. Too many people giving conflicting instructions can create confusion for the audio, video, lighting, and livestream teams. Clear leadership helps the production team respond quickly without disrupting the worship experience. Communication After the Service Healthy communication should continue after the final benediction. A short post-service conversation can help the team identify what worked, what needs improvement, and what should be addressed before the next service. These conversations should be focused on growth—not blame. Corrections should be clear, respectful, and constructive. Volunteers are more likely to improve when they feel supported rather than attacked. Key Takeaway Many churches invest in better microphones, cameras, software, and production equipment while overlooking the importance of communication. The best equipment in the world cannot fix unclear instructions, poor planning, or disconnected teams. When everyone communicates, the production team can prepare properly, volunteers can serve with confidence, and the entire ministry can focus on delivering the message without unnecessary confusion. The Church Sound Podcast provides practical training, encouragement, and conversations for church audio engineers, media teams, production leaders, volunteers, and churches seeking to strengthen their technical ministries.

CSP Classic: How and When to resign from a Media Position

Leaving a church media or production position is not always an easy decision. Whether you are a paid employee, contractor, ministry leader, or volunteer, there may come a point when remaining in the position is no longer healthy for you, the team, or the ministry. In this episode of The Church Sound Podcast, Prentiss L. Thompson discusses how to recognize when it may be time to step away from a media position—and how to handle that transition with wisdom, professionalism, and integrity. Resigning should not be an emotional reaction to one difficult service, disagreement, or frustrating production problem. It requires honest reflection, clear communication, and an understanding of why you believe your season in the position has ended. The conversation also addresses the importance of leaving responsibly. Even when the circumstances are difficult, how you exit can affect your reputation, your relationships, and the team members who must continue serving after you leave. In This Episode Recognizing when frustration has become a larger, ongoing problem Understanding the difference between having a difficult season and needing to resign Evaluating whether the position is affecting your health, family, faith, or personal well-being Knowing when leadership, communication, or cultural problems are unlikely to improve Avoiding emotional or impulsive resignations Having an honest and respectful conversation with church leadership Giving appropriate notice whenever possible Helping the church prepare for the transition Organizing files, passwords, equipment information, and production procedures Training or preparing the person who may serve after you Leaving without damaging relationships or creating unnecessary conflict Protecting your character and professional reputation during the transition Questions to Consider Before Resigning Before making a final decision, ask yourself: Have I clearly communicated my concerns? Have I allowed leadership an opportunity to respond? Is the problem temporary, or has it become a consistent pattern? Am I resigning because I have reached a thoughtful decision, or because I am angry? Can the situation be improved through clearer expectations or healthier boundaries? What steps can I take to leave the ministry in a stable position? Key Takeaway There are times when stepping away is the right and necessary decision. However, leaving well is just as important as knowing when to leave. Your final weeks in a position should reflect the same integrity, preparation, and commitment that you brought when you first accepted the responsibility. Do not allow a difficult ending to erase the value of the work you contributed or the relationships you developed. When it is time to resign, communicate clearly, prepare the team, document what is needed, and leave with peace rather than bitterness. The Church Sound Podcast provides practical conversations, training, and encouragement for church audio engineers, media teams, production leaders, volunteers, and churches working to strengthen their technical ministries.
