The focus for Season 3 is impact, which comes with a title change from The Churchill Collective to The Churchill Changemakers and a new batch of extraordinary people who received their Churchill Fellowships some years ago, to reveal their impact over time.
Michelle Ainsworth, Churchill Fellow and host of The Churchill Changemakers, talks to 10 bold thinkers, driven to learn more globally and return home to make an impact locally.
You'll hear stories on topics from 'media literacy for primary school children' to 'tobacco control', and from 'maintaining historical keyboard instruments' to 'public toilet taboos, design and policy'.
So, what did these changemakers do with those powerful new ideas, and how have they driven impact locally? We invite you to listen to The Churchill Changemakers and find out.
Reunited: How law can bring refugee families back together
Across the globe, millions of people have been forced from their homes, with many still waiting to be reunited with loved ones.
In this episode, Host and Churchill Fellow Michelle Ainsworth speaks with Patrick O’Connor, Principal Lawyer and CEO of the Tasmanian Refugee Legal Service, about why and how legal help can change lives for refugee families.
In 2022, Patrick was awarded The Gallaugher Bequest Churchill Fellowship to develop an effective reunification legal framework for refugee families separated by conflict. As a result, he travelled to 11 European countries to study family reunification law, and shares practical ways Australia can do better.
Fellowship Sponsor: The Gallaugher Bequest Churchill Fellowship.

Thinking beyond the front line: Tackling vicarious trauma at work
Across courtrooms, newsrooms, hospitals and insurance call centres, a growing number of workers are carrying the psychological cost of other people’s worst days. So what happens when caring for others begins to harm the carers themselves?
In this episode of The Churchill Changemakers, host and Churchill Fellow Michelle Ainsworth speaks with social worker Amy Nicholas about her 2023 Churchill Fellowship, during which she explored second-hand trauma, or “vicarious” trauma at work, and how exposure to others’ traumatic experiences can carry an immense psychological and emotional toll.
Amy explains why vicarious trauma is increasingly impacting not only traditional frontline workers but also “digital frontline” employees who view digital evidence of these incidents on CCTV and social media.

Changing the game: confronting racism through sport
Sport can help change hearts, minds, and systems. In this episode of The Churchill Changemakers, host Michelle Ainsworth speaks with Jamal Elsheikh, Director of Programs and Partnerships at Reflect Forward, an organisation that leverages the power of sport and athletes to tackle racism in Australia.
Jamal shares his powerful personal journey - from surviving a vicious racist attack and growing up across cultures to harnessing the unifying power of sport to drive anti-racism education.
Drawing on insights from his 2022 Churchill Fellowship travels across the UK, US and Switzerland, Jamal outlines why racism is a public health issue, and why education - not punishment - must lead systemic change.
