About The CineMEH Podcast

Hosts screenwriter Joshua Rigdon and author Ryan Cipriani take a sardonic but lively look at some of the most forgettable movies of the last decades in this film critique podcast devoted to the forgotten "mid" movie. Not good movies, not bad movies just... fine movies. Each week, Josh and Ryan humorously pick apart a cinematic offering that never quite arrived and discuss why. You'll learn about film story structure, financial constraints, bland writing, and middling performances on each adventure through a movie you likely forgot ever existed in the first place.

The Eras Tour: Godzilla Minus One

This is it! The final Godzilla appearance in the CineMeh Podcast timeline for a while, and... just... DAMN what a Godzilla movie this is. Going 'back to its roots,' Godzilla Minus One takes host Josh and co-host Ryan to post-World War II Japan, in the wreckage of fire-bombed Tokyo, following a disgraced Japanese pilot trying to find purpose in life after the war. Captions guy kinda doesn't want to really say anything sarcastic about this movie, because it might not only be the best Godzilla movie since Godzilla 1954, it might actually just straight up be the best kaiju movie ever put to film. Make no mistake: this is a good film. A legitimately, unironically good film. It is powerful, evocative, painful and resonant. It will make you question the choices you've made in life, the terrible cost to humanity that racks up in the course of war, and just how narrow the line is that separates us from the animals. Godzilla Minus One is an actual tour-de-force, an overused aphorism that absolutely applies here. It's a good conversation with Josh and Ryan. It's a better movie. **Caption guy's note: the 'minus one' in the title refers to the abject devistation of Japan post-World War II where Japan was considered as 'reset to zero' in the aftermath, and the addition of another disaster, in the form of Godzilla, set the country to a status of minus one (below zero)** Godzilla Minus One was released in 2023 and stars Minami Hamabe, Ryûnosuke Kamiki, Sakura Andô, and Yuki Yamada

The Eras Tour: Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)

Ya know who looks an AWFUL lot like Scarlet Witch? Exorcism lady. Oh, I should correct this: Exorcism lady from the Conjuring franchise, not the original horror classic of the 1970s. I only bring this up, because it took co-host Ryan several watch throughs of this movie to realize that Vera Farmiga is, in fact, NOT Elizabeth Olsen, and his confusion should be the source of a lifetime of ridicule. The penultimate Godzilla movie in the CineMeh Podcast mini series is... the most boring?! HHHHHWWWWWWHHHHAAAAAAATTTTT?! No, seriously, how does a movie with this much star power, this much budget, this much special effect, this much monster, and this much g.d. G.D. (that's goddamned Godzilla) end up being... boring? Because it is. Like, painfully and unfortunately. It is also so riddled with plot holes it went out on Halloween and everyone thought it was dressed up like Swiss Cheese. That's a first draft joke, by the way, captions guy thought that one up on the spot as he was typing. This week, Josh and Ryan plod through a monster disaster movie so boilerplate and forgetable, it might have actually made the original podcast all on its own without this special event. It's that... bland. And that's a crime, like, really, because with the amount of amazing stuff stuffed into this, you'd think they coulda gotten some better stuff out. Frickin' Tywin Lanister is in this movie! What's he doing here?! And if you think captions guy is just going a little crazy, he couldn't be more sane if he tried. That... that's a line from the movie. Delivered by Vera Farmiga with the gravitas of a fourth grader playing the turkey in a Thanksgiving school play re-enactment. Anyway. Godzilla #6. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown and Ken Wantanabe with absolutely baffling appearances by Bradley Whitford and Charles fucking Dance.

   The Eras Tour: Shin Godzilla

To bake a Shin Godzilla: 1 Parts Japanese Kaiju metaphor for atomic destruction 1 Parts Aaron Sorkin political thriller 1 Parts Joseph Campbell high concept social satire 1 Parts Early 2000s found footage horror Blend all parts at high speed, then HIGHER SPEED, until fully combined, let stand for two hours. What a WEIRD movie this is. But also: what a WONDERFUL movie this is. As we transition into the Reiwa era of Godzilla films, we find ourself in co-host Ryan's favorite of the series, 2016's Shin Godzilla. Part political satire, part disaster movie, Shin Godzilla takes a fast-talking, beaurocratic, West Wing style approach to the monster disaster franchise and does so (in the opinions of these reviewers) with remarkable competency. That said: let's be clear. This is a very strange film. And it is borderline hilarious until (as host Josh puts it) "It very much is not anymore." It features the most animal, alien version of Godzilla to date, a bafflingly opaque subplot regarding maps that origami into genetic code (no, really) and some of the quickest dialogue beats of the entire saga. If you are not FULLY DIALED IN for the entire movie, you're going to miss something, and even then, it can be super hard to keep up. Still. For all its weirdness, this is, in the hosts' opinion, a really cool, unique, and fascinating entry in the Godzilla franchise. Would recommend. Just... actually watch this one maybe half speed? Instead of 2x? Like, actually slow the movie down to try and keep up? Because stuff happens SO FAST and it can be a real bear trying to figure out why Godzilla was a tentacle ten minutes ago, and now he's unleashing catastrophic nuclear yield. Shin Godzilla was released in 2016 and stars Hiroki Hasagewa, Yutaka Takenouchi, Satomi Ishihara, and Ren Osugi
