Mike and Joe Bowling on Englewood, Indianapolis Affordable Housing and Faith
Indianapolis affordable housing is personal for Mike and Joe Bowling. Their Englewood neighborhood work now includes about 450 rental units, including homes for roughly 100 families emerging from chronic homelessness.
Mike, pastor of Englewood Christian Church, and Joe, executive director of Englewood Community Development Corporation, explain how their congregation became rooted in the Near East Side. What began with neighbors moving onto the same blocks, sharing Sunday meals and repairing houses grew into a wider effort to strengthen families, create stable housing and build partnerships across Indianapolis.
They describe the redevelopment of the historic P.R. Mallory campus with John Boner Neighborhood Centers, their proposal for the former Indiana Women's Prison site and a partnership involving Eastern Star Church and seven former public housing communities. Joe says that broader effort involves about 1,000 housing units serving approximately 3,500 residents.
The father and son also discuss making room for younger leaders, welcoming neighbors of different faiths and identifying the skills already present within a congregation. Through Cultivating Communities, they encourage churches to map their assets and listen before launching new programs. Mike points to DayStar Childcare, which serves about 170 children, as another example of community built through everyday service.
