[…] In the final year of the city of Brooklyn, its duly elected coroners earned $8.50 per inquest, almost $350 adjusted for inflation today. Not bad. But each inquest also needed a jury, who also got paid. And pretty often its members were made up of friends, cronies, or anyone else you might want to do a favor. That was when a coroner actually held an inquest. What Combs and Nason were accused of was not holding inquests. According to the district attorney, of the 325 inquests Combs and Nason had billed Brooklyn for, 128 of them hadn't happened. The names of the decedents were all of people who had died from natural causes. […]
