[…] One feature is that apparently in polio, although there's like a flaccid paralysis, it's usually asymmetric. whereas for FDR, it was symmetric. The paralysis tends to progress much more quickly in polio over just a few days rather than the two-week sort of ascending tempo that Roosevelt had. The bulbar symptoms, like the facial stuff that FDR experienced, also less typical of polio. But perhaps what most strongly argues against this diagnosis was the sensory symptoms he had. For polio, generally not seen in the acute phase because the virus infects motor neuron cell bodies in the spine. So sensory symptoms, they can be a big part of the post-polio syndrome and the chronic pain that can come with that. […]
