Milonguero Culture or Modern Tango? What Should We Preserve?
What does it really mean to preserve milonguero culture? Is it about protecting a specific style of dancing, or is it about preserving a way of relating to people through tango?
In this episode, we explore the values that defined the traditional milonguero culture of Buenos Aires (kindness, musicality, patience, humility, and genuine connection) and why many experienced dancers see these qualities as the true heart of social tango. Meet six people who made tango what it is today: Enrique Santos Discépolo, the orphan whose lyrics earned him the nickname “the philosopher of tango”; Osvaldo Pugliese, whose orchestra kept playing beside his empty piano, marked by a single red carnation, while he was imprisoned; José Basso, who led his orchestra for more than fifty years; Elvino Vardaro, who became a great violinist despite losing part of his thumb as a child; Tita Merello, who learned to read at twenty and became a voice of Buenos Aires; and Osvaldo Zotto, the dancer who trusted elegance over acrobatics.
