[…] When you are a state, you cannot do that. It's about citizenship. It's about rights. A state cannot be governed like a Jewish community abroad. So the question is, who is a Jew? Because a Jew can have a passport. And who will decide who is a Jew? And who will elect the one that will decide? So in 1949, the ultra-Orthodox said, a rabbi, only a rabbi, can decide who is a Jew and then who will be a citizen of the state of Israel. The other said, no, no way. We're in a democracy. A rabbi is not elected. A rabbi imposes himself like a philosopher. It's very vague. I mean, institutions don't work like this. […]
