It was, like, post-nuclear weapons coming to the emergence in the forefront of the sort of collective, not just imagination, but, like, lived reality, right? And her concern was the trend toward nihilism. And it's super prescient now, right? Like, I mean, every day is a fight toward nihilism. But she believed that by confronting the death, the absence of I, right, whether it was through literature, whether it's through, I mean, she wasn't saying this, but I'll say it, through active kind of spirit work, whether it's through any kind of creative process, it is a strike against nihilism to look at what is abject, to understand that mortality is... non-negotiable, and to choose life instead, to not surrender, to not ignore it, to not pretend that the bad, hard, scary thing is going to happen, but rather to stop playing host to a parasite of fear around it.
