[…] I mean, there was nothing like it before and very little like it afterwards until the 20th century. I think that's what led Stravinsky to say that this piece is perpetually modern. It will be always modern. And it was a favorite work of Stravinsky's because there's something so uncompromising about it in its angularity, in how confrontational it is, and the way in which Beethoven wants to communicate musically a struggle without any sharp edges being smoothened in the slightest, without any concession to consonants, to, you know, it's sounding nice, to put it very simply. He simply, you know, presents these very, very conflicting musical ideas in a way where we feel that On the face of it, there's no way in which they could possibly align somehow in an even remotely comprehensible harmonic palette.
