At any rate, in 1894, he went to the authorities and asked permission to enter unseen the minefield protecting Fort Henry, but he was refused. That's all old Simon needed. He just got in his submarine, the Argonaut it was, and went right into the center of the minefield without being observed or blown to bits. That convinced the powers that be, and he was put to work. And from those first experimental ships came the sub-fleet of World War II that sank more than four and a half million tons of shipping, including over 126 warships. […]
