[…] The church was involved in various ways in terms of helping people who weren't used to living together, navigating life as a husband and a wife under the same roof for the first time. And you started to see, for instance, from 1890 through the 1950s, black men and women got married at earlier ages and were more likely to be married by the age of 35 than their white counterparts. Right. So that was one strength. But even during that time, you saw... um non-marital birth rates among black women still significantly higher than among their white peers okay all right so again it was that tension that that duality that was evident and again you could you could understand that coming out of a history of child slavery but by the time you get to the 1960s and particularly in the mid-60s you have two cultural shocks um that completely transformed Family formation dynamics in the black community.
