The Village That Disappeared: The Lost Colony of Roanoke
In 1587, more than one hundred English settlers established a colony on Roanoke Island. Three years later, Governor John White returned to find the settlement abandoned, its buildings dismantled, its people gone, and a single word carved into a wooden post: CROATOAN. The fate of the Lost Colony of Roanoke would become one of the most enduring mysteries in American history. But the evidence left behind tells a more complicated story than a colony that simply vanished without a trace. In this episode of The House of Strange, we trace the troubled history of the Roanoke Colony, John White and Virginia Dare, the mysterious Croatoan message, archaeological discoveries on Hatteras Island and inland North Carolina, and the theories surrounding what ultimately happened to the missing colonists. From massacre and starvation to relocation, fragmentation, and assimilation into Indigenous communities, we examine what the historical evidence actually supports and how centuries of speculation transformed an unfinished colonial story into the legend of the Lost Colony. Perhaps Roanoke’s greatest mystery is not why an entire community disappeared, but whether it truly disappeared at all.

The Man No One Knew: The Somerton Man
In December 1948, the body of an unidentified man was discovered on Somerton Beach near Adelaide, Australia. With no identification, labels removed from his clothing, and no clear explanation for his death, the stranger would become known as the Somerton Man and the center of one of Australia’s most enduring mysteries.
In this episode of The House of Strange, we explore the Somerton Man case, from the mysterious scrap of paper bearing the words “Tamám Shud” and its connection to the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám to the coded writing, unanswered questions, and theories that surrounded the unidentified man for decades. We also examine the DNA research that eventually pointed to a name: Carl Webb.
The Somerton Man may no longer be entirely unknown, but identifying him has not answered every question. Who was Carl Webb, why was he on Somerton Beach, and what really happened to him in 1948?

The Boy With No Past: The Mystery of Kaspar Hauser
In 1828, a mysterious young man named Kaspar Hauser appeared on the streets of Nuremberg, Germany, carrying two letters and claiming to have spent much of his life imprisoned in near-total isolation. He could barely communicate, knew almost nothing about the world around him, and seemed to have no past anyone could verify. Almost immediately, Kaspar Hauser became one of 19th-century Europe’s most perplexing mysteries. In this episode of The House of Strange, we explore Hauser’s sudden appearance in Nuremberg, his extraordinary claims about his childhood and captivity, the attempts to uncover his true identity, and the rumors that he may have been connected to European royalty. Then, just five years after his appearance, Kaspar Hauser died from a mysterious stab wound under circumstances nearly as baffling as his arrival. Was he a lost heir, the victim of a hidden conspiracy, an elaborate fraud, or something stranger? Nearly two centuries later, the mystery of Kaspar Hauser remains unresolved.
