Entrepreneur with ADHD used AI to stay on track. Now it’s a core part of his company.

Josh Driver founded the firm Selflessly in 2017. It took another three years to launch the software he envisioned to help companies develop and manage their philanthropic efforts, such as making directed donations and arranging for volunteer opportunities. Earlier this summer, Driver re-launched Selflessly’s platform, rebuilding it from the ground up in considerably less time. And this iteration had a striking new feature, an AI assistant woven throughout the platform. Its name is Phil, a play on the word “philanthropy.” Phil helps clients figure out their philanthropic strategies, but it also plays a huge role in helping run Selflessly. Driver, who has attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, began using AI tools to keep himself on track and boost productivity. He now uses Phil to help him handle an array of time-intensive administrative tasks, like reading and drafting responses to email. Phil can catch and fix bugs in its own system. Phil is also Driver’s sounding board, and it occasionally oversteps its bounds. In a recent instance, it went way off script with a client, pointing up the risks in turning over so much responsibility to AI. But Driver also sees it as an indispensable tool.   Recent episodes of the podcast. have focused on potential long-term risks of the widespread use of AI. In this week’s edition, we use Selflessly as a case study in how AI is being used by a small business right now. Driver also discusses his early career in emergency medicine — specifically, burn and would care — and how that led him to technology and nonprofits.
