[…] Part one, the founding of the Republic. My name is Rosario Forlenza and I'm Associate Professor at Lewis University in Rome. At the end of World War II, Italy emerged from a tumultuous quarter of a century. It had weathered 20 years of fascist dictatorship under Benito Mussolini, known as Il Duce, then military defeat by the Allies in 1943 and followed by nearly two years of civil war. Now at peace, the country was faced with the monumental task of rebuilding the authority of the state. And so the problem after 1945 was not simply to restore elections. It was to reconstruct a democratic political community after the disaster of fascism and war. […]
