#148 Bridie O'Donnell - Former Professional Cyclist, Medical Doctor, Author & broadcaster

This week Brian and Harrison intro the show by covering all the major topics in their lives and within the AFL, including; BT goes to the races, the AFL fixture, Melb. Cup weekend in Walhall, and plenty more. Their guest this week is former professional cyclist, medical doctor, author, and, one of the voices of the Tour de France, Bridie O’Donnell. We were blown away by Bridie’s passion for life and her work, engaging demeanour, and her genuine and caring nature. It's a conversation that goes in just about every direction, and one of our favourites. Bridie's journey into elite cycling was anything but conventional. After graduating at the top of her medical school class and working as a doctor, she decided to pursue a career in professional cycling, starting later than most, taking on the European circuit and proving plenty of people wrong along the way. She shares what it was like making that leap, having a team that believes in you, the realities of racing overseas and the extraordinary challenge of breaking the UCI Women's Hour Record at 41. The boys get right into the world of professional cycling, from what a day at the Tour de France looks like to the remarkable physical and mental demands placed on the riders. Bridie also talks about becoming the first woman on SBS's Tour de France commentary team, working alongside Matt Keenan and what makes the Tour such a compelling sporting spectacle. There are some fascinating and frank discussions around the realities of women's professional sport, the treatment and conditions female cyclists have faced, the progress that's been made and what still needs to change. Bridie also reflects on her medical background, the impact of elite endurance sport on women's health, her memoir Life and Death: A Cycling Memoir and her work helping improve opportunities for women in sport. From medicine and broadcasting to government, life beyond elite sport and plenty of other unexpected detours, Bridie is an incredibly engaging storyteller who brings a perspective you don't hear every day. A terrific conversation with a brilliant, funny and articulate guest who has lived several fascinating lives, and isn't short of an opinion or a story to go with them. #146 Stephen Conroy - Former Australian Minister for Communications

This week Brian and Harrison intro the show by covering all the major topics in their lives and within the AFL, including; Brian & Tania’s ‘big’ 4-day holiday, AFL trade period wrap-up, a Melbourne Marathon discussion, another Reading.Watching.Listening, and plenty more. Their guest this week is former Federal Minister for Labor, Stephen Conroy who joins the boys for a wide-ranging, relaxed chat covering politics, sport, technology and where Australia is heading. After 20 years in federal politics, including serving as Senate Leader and Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Stephen has seen plenty from the inside. He shares what life in politics is really like, some of the biggest misconceptions people have about politicians, and what he learned about human nature during two decades in the thick of it. The conversation turns to some big questions facing society right now - whether the social contract between generations is breaking down, the growing influence of the tech giants, our addiction to technology and the challenges AI presents. Stephen also reflects on the state of Australian politics, cost-of-living pressures, housing affordability and our relationship with the United States. There’s a fascinating discussion about the future of sport on television, too. Having been involved in both buying and selling sports broadcasting rights, Stephen gives his perspective on streaming, the changing media landscape and how we might watch sport in the years ahead. He also talks about his time as Executive Chairman of the A-League and whether politics and sport have more in common than people might think. A really interesting conversation that covers plenty of ground, with Stephen offering a candid perspective on politics, technology, sport and the world we’re living in.
