[…] We didn't know that we were related to the people there in the massacre. My great-grandfather's brother, he was the one that survived the massacre. And his son also was a coal miner. All this stuff, you know, we knew nothing about just recently. In September, 1885, a labor dispute years in the making erupted in the Rock Springs coal mines. Chinese workers have been brought in to break a strike years earlier, and those who stayed worked for lower wages than their European counterparts. Union Pacific owned the mines in the railroad. The company took advantage of this dynamic to keep the miners at work, no matter the cost to the Chinese. […]
