[…] Filmmakers back then didn't have a way to synchronize sound with their film, so movie theaters would hire live bands or organists to accompany their pictures. Originally, the musician's job was to cover up the sound of the projector, as people thought the loud clicking sound made the images on screen feel ghostly. Eventually, film composers and musicians developed ways to portray the emotion shown on screen. They used popular classical pieces from Chopin, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, and others mixed in with contemporary compositions called photo play music. These were short, evocative compositions that could be used and reused across many different films. […]
