I mean, doctors or healers or shamans always had an exalted role in societies long before they had effective interventions or long before they had the kind of interventions that today we deem effective. What they had instead was a deep understanding of fundamental human needs as people were facing problems illness as they were facing their own decline, their own mortality, the healer, the doctor, the shaman, the human assigned to the task of interpretation would come into that and give some meaning to it in a way that people found healing and comforting, even if it wasn't curative.
