[…] He recorded this tune, I Belong to the Band, for the Melaton label in 1935. He was blind from childhood, and he combined religious lyrics with this extremely advanced and great finger-picking style on the guitar that went on to influence countless people and later generations of guitarists. Some of them actually went down and studied with the Reverend in Harlem, I believe, back in the 60s. He started out as a blues player, although he always, of course, just like the theme here we got tonight, he always had a lot of those gospel songs in there. And apparently stories I've heard later on in his life, he actually stopped playing blues music. […]
